The subject dealing with the relationship between modern Chinese poetics and Christianity is of great realistic and academic significance, which occupies a very important place in the modern and contemporary Chinese thought history. Most problems accumulated through the almost one hundred years of modernistic movement of Chinese literature are basically the problem of value. Unless this problem is faced directly and solved, many other problems would remain confusing. There can be many different solutions to this problem, of which one is to trace back to the source of the value construction of modern Chinese poetics, to track down the evolutionary process of its value formation, to examine its value form and to test its legitimacy. The research in the relationship between modern Chinese poetics and Christianity is a pioneering attempt of that kind.Chinese modernity was somewhat forced into being in the process of contact and contradiction of Chinese and western ancient and modern culture. Therefore, Christianity, as one of the two greatest sources of western culture, has undoubtedly played an important role in Chinese modernity. In recent ten years, the research into the relationship between Chinese modern and contemporary literature and Christianity has once become a hot academic topic and many achievements have been made, among which are Two-sided sword: Christianity and Twentieth century Chinese novels by Louis Robinson, Wondering under the Cross: Christian Culture and Chinese Modern Literature by Yang Jianlong, Twentieth Century Chinese Literature and Christian Culture by Wang Benchao, and Modern Chinese Literatureand Christianity by Xu Zhenglin as well as the related discussions of Liu Yong and Tan Guilin. These achievements have already contributed a lot to the research into the historical facts indicating the relationship between modern and contemporary Chinese literature and writers and Christianity, to making clear the clues of its development, to further explaining the Christian quality of modern and contemporary Chinese literary works, and to collecting, arranging and digging out more relative materials. However, there is still great space left for the study of their relationship through discussing the value construction of Chinese modern poetics. This research is strongly question-aware and methodology-conscious. From ultimate to concrete problems, from present to historical problems, and from native to otherness problems, this dissertation elaborates on the following points by combining " returning to historical facts" and "value judgment", "micro-study" and "comprehensive inference".The introduction part introduces the cause of the problems and the sphere, methods and concrete ways of the research. The first chapter, from culture, aesthetics to literature, from historical phenomenon to theories, comprehensively describes the Christian context which makes possible modern Chinese poetics during the last one hundred years when modern Chinese began to replace and has replaced ancient Chinese since late Qing Dynasty from three aspects: modernity and Christianity, aestheticism and Christianity, modern Chinese literature and Christianity. The second chapter outlines the historical developmental track of the relationship between modern Chinese poetics and Christianity in recent almost one century. By employing "ethic discourse", "politic discourse" and "religious discourse", it analyzes the three historical changes of the status of Christianity in modern Chinese poetics and their related thought resources; it also reveals the intrinsic logic relationship between the development of Chinese modern poetics and Christianity and draws the whole picture of the history of their relationship from levels of both facts and values. From chapter three to chapter seven are case studies, including Lu Xun's edifying poetics, Zhou Zouren's common poetics, Bin Xin's love poetics, Shi Tiesheng's existential poetics and Yu Jian's folk poetics as well as their potential relationship to Christianity. In the eighth chapter, based on t... |
