The Study On Origination Of Qingshi Story

Feng Menglong (冯梦龙 ) ' s Qingshi ( 情史) or Qingshi leilue (情史类略 ) is a collection of Chinese love stories that are classified into twenty-four major categories, each further divided into subsections and concluded with a paragraph of commentary. The stories were collected in the early seventeenth century, just a decade or two before the fall of the Ming dynasty.The thesis philologically discusses stories of Qingshi, that is a voluminous compilation of more than 860 tales. The compiler states in Feng Menglong' preface that Qingshi is the result of an effort to "elaborate on what I might have seen or learned" . In other words, while the compiler claims that all his Qingshi entries either contains a variety of true-life elements, or else have a documentary basis, he does confess to having at times elaborated upon, or made alterations in, the "originals" , although more often than not he fails to provide the reader with his sources -documentary, hearsay, or other; he consistently fails to distinguish composition of his own from those of differing oringin; and the reader not infrequently encounters an entry in which he cannot even distinguish the story proper from the compiler' s commentary.In identifying sources for those entries whose events take place before the founding of the Ming dynasty; in particular, there is little difficulty in identifying those entries whose characters are well-known historical figures or popular folk heroes in literature.
