Cooperative Principle (CP) is one of the core ideas in Pragmatics which is significant in guiding verbal communication in the living world. This dissertation has systematically analysed the function impacts and performance of CP in the communication of Chinese by authentic materials in Chinese, with the theoretical background of Linguistics Philosophy Sociology and Culture , aiming at the organic combination of Western linguistic theory and communication in Chinese, to make diverse efforts in terms of realizing localization study of Western linguistic theory.The first three chapters in the dissertation have focused on theoretical research. The first chapter has presented a brief survey of how CP theory had been brought into being and the findings in this field both national and abroad. QIM Principle by Levinson, Politeness Principle by Leech, Relevance Theory by Sperber and Wilson have been reviewed first, later this chapter has turned the emphasis on the analysis of the Pragmatic Inference System by Xu Shenghuan, the Implicature Inference Principle by Zhou Liquan, the Appropriateness Principle by Suo Zhenyu and the Goal-intention Principle by Qian Guanlian.In the second chapter, the discussion began with the contend form and attitude of cooperation, the connotation and the referent of CP concept have been made clear ; the politeness, humour and euphemism of verbal communication have been argued first to implement and enrich an attitude maxim; after the implementation of CP theory, several concepts in relation, i.e.,"successful communicaion","cooperative communication", "appropriate communication", and so on, have been distinguished. An elaborate inquiry into the relationship between CP and utterance has been done from two dimensions of obedience and violation.The third chapter has combined organically CP and Speech Acts theories to paraphrase CP once again from the three levels of locutionary, illocutionary and perlocutionary on the basis of distinguishing locutionary cooperation, illocutionary cooperation and perlocutionary cooperation, with stress on the concept performance and meaning of perlocutionary cooperation.In the latter three chapters, an exemplified approach has been taken to make research on the applicability of CP. The fourth chapter has worked on the daily verbal communication of undergraduates, to generalize the regular pattern and function, on the purpose of testing and enriching the theoretical study of CP, which has also provided thinking plot for the further and specified study of CP.The fifth chapter has made a thorough investigation of the relationship between the utterance style and CP of the enterprises'managers in Zhejiang from the reality of their verbal communication. Furthermore, the divergent performance by the managers and the undergraduates has been put in contrast, which thus has provided the schemata for the communication reality with supportive evidence.The sixth chapter has made analysis of the general function and different roles played by the different rules of CP in respect of Dialogue of Man and Machine and AI(artificial intelligence) with the authentic data of Turing Testing, which has made primary attempts in highlighting CP's significant function in the Dialogue between Man and Machine as well as AI research.
