With the implementation of the policy of reform and opening to the outside world in 1978, great changes have taken place in the development of Chinese contemporary social culture. A new cultural form—Chinese contemporary popular music has sprung up and become an important component part of Chinese contemporary mass culture. In its development of nearly 30 years, Chinese contemporary popular music has gradually walked out of the initially much criticized, marginal state and achieved its social identity as the most influential cultural form in Chinese contemporary musical world by marching towards the central belt of culture. As such an important form of the mass culture, popular music is by no means isolated in the development of social culture. Its formation, development, and the unique features represented in each historical period are inevitably under the influence of politics, economics, and culture of that period.
