The thesis studies systematicaly about brief connotations and main contents of the liberalism in the period of Chinese May 4th Movement, including clarities of conceptions such as liberalism, May 4th Movement , Chinese liberalism, the liberalism in the period of Chinese May 4th Movement etc.The liberalism as overseas imports confronts conflicts since it has been introduced to China, which indicates it will inevitably goes to a branch road. Chinese liberalism blooming during May 4th Movement period, is due to the historical logic from introduction to development, and the special history situation in May 4th Movement period. John Dewey and Bertrand Arthur William Russell come to China one by one, which also incite Chinese liberialism's spreading.The contents of Chinese liberalism in the period of May 4th Movement is of great diversity, the core of which is the individualism as a style of Ibsenism. To achieve the ultimate purpose, Chinese liberalists in wusi period carry out a thorough anti-traditionalism; they criticize feudalism patriachal clan system thoughts; they pay close attention to women liberation. They criticize cold-bloodedly all bondage of individual liberalism in order to achieve a liberalism constitutional government by progressing step by step or improvement not by a revolution.Li dazhao and Hu shi, Among them did a war of words named questions and principles embark. Since then Chinese liberalism in the period of May 4th Movement goes to a branch road.Chinese liberalism as a constitutional government failed due to such reasons. But the author holds the idea that the fundamental reason is the liberalism departure from Chinese reality, so it is impossible to achieve great history tasks of anti-imperialism and anti-feudalism and thus make the status of half-colony and half-feudalism overthrowed, and it is inevitable for advanced Chinese to turn to Marxism.
