This paper explored a subject that was at once traditional and of innovativesignificance: the relationship between the frontier nationality in northeast China and thecentral dynasty. It was traditional because it had been a heated topic receiving continualresearch work;while innovative since it demanded author's initiative to research on an areawhich scholars had not touched on, that was the 326-year history from Sui Dynasty tillTang Dynasty in China, and to give a complete and systematic scholarly summary.Apart from the newly selected subject matter, the paper also tried to distinguish itselfby adopting new perspectives and methods to research. As for perspectives, the paperdiscussed the relationship between the frontier nationality in northeast China and thecentral dynasty in Sui and Tang period, and tried to give a clear picture of its development.As for methods, the paper combined diachronic research with synchronic research inanalyzing and summarizing many incidents among those frontier nationalities in northeastChina and the central dynasty. It helped a lot to display the main characteristics of therelationship between the two sides.China is a nation of a long history and many frontier nationalities. The history ofnationality relationship, especially the relationship between minorities in frontier areas andthe central dynasty, was obviously highly concerned among scholars. Through the paper'sexploration, the author hoped it would provide Chinese scholars and departmentsconcerned with direct or indirect reference in discussing and solving the related problems.Since history was a mirror;by reading it, people could look back at the history and plan forthe future on the basis of human's civilization.The paper consists of five parts:Part 1 is introduction: It included the significance of research on this area, thesituation that this area faced, and the ideas and methods of writing it.Part 2 is the relationship between Gaogouli Kingdom and the central dynasty in Suiand Tang period: It stressed on the central dynasty's policy towards Gaogouli Kingdom,the reasons why Sui and Tang's central dynasty waged a war against Gaogouli Kingdomand the change in northeast China after Gaogouli Kingdom failed the war.Part 3 is the relationship between Bohai and Tang's central dynasty: It mainlyconcerned with the development of Mohe nationality, the justification of some of theproblems of Bohai Kingdom, and the forge of the diplomatic relationship between BohaiKingdom and Tang Dynasty.Part 4 is the relationship between Qidan and the central dynasty in Sui and Tangperiod: It explored the development of the king-and–subject relationship between Qidanand the central dynasty of Sui and Tang, and the policy towards Qidan in Sui and TangDynasty.Part 5 is the relationship between the nationalities of Xi, Shiwei, Wuluohun and Qidanand the central dynasty in Sui and Tang period: Except Xi nationality, the nationalities ofShiwei, Xi, Danluo, Wuluohun and Liugui were relatively less powerful nationalities. Anall-included description of the relationship between them and the central dynasty of Suiand Tang, would help us get a better and complete understanding of the policies towardsdifferent frontier nationalities in Sui and Tang Dynasty.
