Since 1980s, researches on self-esteem deriving from and thriving in the West have been increasingly a hotpot of psychological researches in China and obtained plentiful results, but they were to some degree away from the native culture and people's true life due to lack of reflection on the inherent nature of self-esteem, which made the processes and results of researches on self-esteem still extrinsic to people's true life, the core role of self-esteem in the essence of man's life and living states not being fully shown, and the real route of changing man's life quality through the maturation of consciousness of self-esteem not being built. Therefore, this dissertation tried to use the unique visual angle of searching the "root" and nature, to understand the inherent characteristics of self-esteem and its significance for human being from the nature of life, and to define the nature of self-esteem as "the spiritual desire for self-protection achieved via objects". To further annotate this nature of self-esteem, this dissertation tried to answer some questions by exploring the meaning of self-esteem, origin and development, relations and characteristics, functions and types, contents and forms, internal and external causes, race and culture, education and make and so on. These questions include: Which contents are there in the meaning of self-esteem? How did self-esteem come to being and what changes did it come through? What relation is it between self-esteem and the self and which characteristics does it have because of this relationship? Which differences are there in this spiritual desire among people and what function is it as for individual being and development? What contents and forms exist in the real world as a spiritual desire? Which factors restrict and influence this desire? How does man achieve this desire in fact? How should this self-conscious spiritual desire realize and how should education facilitate this realization as a civilized form of transferring life particularity when we know the characteristics and significance for human of this desire at last? It defined the significance of self-esteem for human's being and true life and formed the education's self-consciousness for true self-esteem by reflecting on the general meaning and nature of self-esteem. It gave attention to real impetus on individual being and development and realized the rational thought for the harmoniousness of individual living states and the improvement of life quality by studying these questions.
