This thesis studies the "New Period" novels by taking the predicament consciousness of Chinese modernity as its clew and the self-identity as its narrative core. The research on the self-identity of the "New Period" novels is not only a question of human being, but also an important question of literature. We can not only grasp the novelists' changes in spirit and their immanence puzzledom, but also can we dicuss the spiritual rout which behinds the transition of narrative art, so can we find out its meaning of aesthetics and criticize its art limitations. The "self is the pronoun of "human being"in the "scar novels" and "Reflection novels" which is being considered as the returning to the enlightment of the May Fourth, "human being"is not only identical with "people", but also they communicate with grand discourses such as "party"" country"" nation". The "individual" enlightment discourse which takes "human being"as its focus badgers with "colony" discourse which takes "people" as its focus in these novels. This is the experience of Chinese revolutionary modernity that cannot being contained by enlightment discourse of the May Fourth. The amalgamation, confliction and opposition between enlightment identity and people identity is the representation of identity crisis in them. Most of novelists cannot exceed colony, this results in the absence of deeper reflection in their novels. It tells us that it is the "modernization" that connnects the "rupture" between "history" and "nonce". As a narrative od modernity, the imagination and narrative of "reforming novels" is enslaved to ideology in the sense of duple. First, it is enslaved to mainstream political discourse. The history narrative of "reforming novels" is still a kind of art refraction of the "New Period" political discourse because it is resricted by this history narrative parlance. Second, it is also enslaved to taking "modernization" as spiritual belief but not a kind of ideology to be necessarily reconsidered. The "rupture" in history narrative and the romantic disposal on reality supplements each other in modernity dicourse of "reforming novels". It is successive recomposition of socialistic culture/literature. This kind of collective identity is on its acme in "Root-seeking novels" and it break up into individual form exploring of "Vanguard novels"."Root-seeking novels" is the result of the New Enlightment, but it anti-enlightment at the...
