The Modernity Of Liu Yichang's Novels

Liu Yichang can be said a splendid stroke in the history of Hong Kong Literature.After moving to the south to stay in Hong Kong in the late 1940 s,by taking his root into the local,he naturally grafted "May Fourth" Literature into the world of Hong Kong Literature.While introducing a lot of Western modernistic-literature concepts and works in various newspapers and magazines,he created a series of extremely experimental modernism novels with audacious and innovative characteristics in both concept and form.Arguably,starting from Liu Yichang,the mainstream of modern literature in Hong Kong has gradually transformed from romantic literature in the 1940 s towards modernistic literature.Indisputably,he is the representative of pure-literature in Hong Kong.By taking the novels created by Liu Yichang as research object,this paper focused on his works after coming southwards to Hong Kong for purpose of making a clear picture of the changes of such modernity within May Fourth" Literature in moving from Shanghai to Hong Kong,as well as the integrations of national discrete experience carried by narrators and Hong Kong local experience.And its introduction part briefly introduced Liu Yichang's life experience and literature-creating one,as well as pointed out the contributions he made in applying his modernity-taste writing style into Hong Kong Literature.At the same time,this paper also summarized and reorganized a series of analyses on his novel monographs and academic papers.And the main body is totally composed of 3 parts.The first part mainly starts with the life trajectory of Liu Yichang,discusses the formation of the modernity of Liu's novels with the experience of Shanghai and Hong Kong and the local consciousness established with the identity of the writer.First,the experience of Shanghai and Hong Kong made Liu Yichang accept the influence of multiculturalism,which created the conditions for the modernity of his novel.Secondly,unlike other writers migrating from the Inland to Hong Kong of same period,Liu Yichang stepped out of the identity dilemma earlier,which made him A comprehensive perspective of the mentality of Hong Kong people and the establishment of a personal Hong Kong consciousness have enriched the modern experience of Liu Yichang's novels.And the 2nd part came to the view of urban writing.By constructing urban scenes and presenting the cultural integrations of elegance and popularity,novelty and obsolescence and tradition and modernity,it better showed Hong Kong's diversified urban landscapes,unveiled the difficult living experience of local urban people,as well as presented the core of modernity within Liu's novels.And the 3rd part paid more attention to analyzing the narrative modes within his modernism novels and illustrated the modernity of textual narratives in his works from narrative angle,narrative structure and narrative language.And its meaning lies in updating the existing modernity expressing modes within his works for offering referential experience in subsequent researches upon the circle of modernistic literature in Hong Kong.As a leader in Hong Kong Literature,Liu Yichang used his life to practice his literature ideas,as well as well combined his novel forms and content modernity tastes to present the conflicts in characters' inside hearts.As for those Hong Kong writers of the same period,Liu Yichang can be said the 1st person who has permeated his works with modern elements.By setting feet on the novel texts of Liu Yichang,this paper explored the modernity connotations therein.It's believed that this research will play an important role upon how he has pushed the construction of Hong Kong literature localization.
