The problem of the development of the artistic imagination is essentially the problem of how artists developed specific characteristics. The general public often sees artists as proud, lonely, somewhat crazy fantasists. When all is said and done, what is specific to the artistic imagination ? Where these basic concepts come from is the problem considered by this paper. Generally, how society regards artists, and the position of artists in society, play an important role in determining the form of their artistic imagination. The development of art is actually the history of how artists develop and create themselves. This was a long process of development, during which artists used their creativity, ability, and capacity for struggle to gradually gain the understanding of society and the public. Artists, originally regarded as mere craftsmen, through their own efforts, eventually won the respect of society and the public as learned people. As their social position improved, they became conscious of themselves and their position within society, and they gradually developed into a special group differentiated from the common people.The appearance of biographies of artists is a sign of their improving social position. Biographies and stories about artists became very popular and broadened the general public' s understanding of their character and life. What effect do interesting but often not entirely true stories and anecdotes, have on the common people' s perception of artists? The effect the common people' s perception of artists had on theartists themselves is another question considered in this paper.During the course of writing this paper we collected and readnumerous Chinese and foreign language sources, concerning the life stories of individual artists.
