In this dissertation, a systematic and comprehensive study is made into the development of the merchant group of Ningbo since Ming Dynasty. Based on reliable records, the conclusion is arrived at that merchants of Ningbo had already been very actlbe and developed into a provincial merchant group in the years of wanly in Ming Dynasty. During the neigh of the Qing emperors of Qianiong and Jiaqing, the group went into a new era of development. A great progress was made in the trades of ship transport lotion, private bank service private postal service and so on, thus establishing a vast commercial network with the rich Taihu Lake gaiety as its economic center, Up to 1040; the group grew to be a large-scale and powerful commercial group, though traditional and old-styled. After 1840, this group underwent two critical turns, the first being the change of business direction– getting involved in international trade through compradore and import and export trade, the second being chang of investment– a large sum of capital being invested in modern finance, industry and commerce, and transportation. The two changes enabled the group be a modern capitalist, industrial and commercial one in the early years of the twentieth centcery. Centeriny on it , the financial group of jiangsu and Zhejing provinces came into being, which played an important part in the modernization of citied in china, exerting a far-reaching influence.
