The dissertation is a systematic study of the origins of names in Notes to Nomination written by Liu Xi in East Han Dynasty from four aspects: sketch, pronunciation, semantics and evaluation of explanations of the origins of names.The chapter "The Sketch of the Origins of Names" first casts a backward glance at the evolution of the term "the origins of names", and establishes the links and differences between origins of names and etymology. Then follow the analysis of the significance and value of Liu Xi's explanations of origins of names of in Notes to Nominations in the history of Chinese ancient linguistics, of the ways of explanations of pronunciations in the book and a brief assessment of different conclusions drawn from the explanations of pronunciations in the book by the former scholars given.In the chapter "On Relationship between Origins of Names and Pronunciations", there is a comprehensive discussion of the association in the pronunciation between the words and the main words under the explanation based on the previous research, whereby to justify Liu Xi's Notes to Nominations from the perspective of pronunciation.In the chapter "Semantic Study of Origins of Names in Notes to...
