Fang Yan is hailed as "lexics of the earliest development in China's linguistics history" by Luo Changpei. This paper will take Fang Yan as the subject to pursue Yang Xiong's ideology of lexics and it belongs to researches of specific person and book in Chinese linguistics history.The whole paper is divided into 9 chapters.Chapter 1--introduction, which summarizes the situation of related researches and states the meaning and methods of researching.Chapter 2--examples of lecturing and explaining in Fang Yan. This chapter makes thorough classification and categorized descriptions from three aspects: the mechanism of the entries, the examples and terms of lecturing and explaining. It not only straightens out the examples in Fang Yan but also provides premises and bases for the researches in other chapters.Chapter 3--the word meaning system in Fang Yan. This chapter discusses the two aspects of the word meaning system which were handled and exhibited in Fang Yan by Yang Xiong from the point of how he understood and mastered the meaning of words in Fang Yan—the aggregation of words and the aggregation of the meaning of words. The former one includes synonym aggregation and aggregation of words with similar meaning. The latter one focuses on words of several meanings and describes and categorizes their characteristics explicitly.Chapter 4--Yang Xiong's understanding of "ancient words and modern words" in Fang Yan. This chapter probes into Yang Xiong's historical view point of language from dominant and recessive materials of "ancient words and modern words" in Fang Yan. It also discusses the profound and lasting influence of this early-stage view point of language on Chinese dialectology in later ages.Chapter 5--Yang Xiong's researches of dialects in other countries in Fang Yan. Firstly, this chapter inspects the exhibition methods of foreign dialects and the content and characteristics of foreign dialects in Fang Yan; the inspection result shows that Yang Xiong had already developed the ideology of "universal language-dialect". Secondly, it reveals the comparison of geographic differences of dialect vocabularies in Fang Yan and the recognition of dialect in Qin and Jin District as the basic dialect of the universal language at that time. In this way, Yang Xiong's achievement on the researches of foreign dialects gets recognition.Chapter 6--Yang Xiong's theory of "converted words". "Converted words" first appeared in Fang Yan. This chapter firstly illustrates the connotation and form of "converted words" and then summarizes scholars' researches of "converted words" in Fang Yan. Finally, it elaborates the promotion effect of Fang Yan on the development of the "word diversion" study.Chapter 7--Yang Xiong's close attention to the vocabulary culture. On the basis of full description of vocabulary's culture content in Fang Yan, this chapter illustrates Yang Xiong's ideology of culture lexics which was reflected in the vocabulary in Fang Yan and the illustration is from three aspects: the vocabulary itself, the classification of words and arrangement of words. The most important aspect in Yang Xiong's ideology is that Yang Xiong paid more attention to those culture contents which are closely related to people's daily life.Chapter 8--reconsideration of the relationship between Fang Yan and "Erya". This chapter compares the two books from format and content and finally reaches the conclusion: Fang Yan imitated Er Ya in classification, entries-putting, explaining format and other aspects. However, as to the contents, it differed from Er Ya in wring purpose, sources of materials and so on.Chapter 9--Yang Xiong's ideology of lexics. Based on the researches of above chapters, this chapter summarizes Yang Xiong's ideology and methods of lexics. The main aspects of his ideology are: language's changing with times; language's geographic characteristics and conversion in language development. The main methods are: find similarities and observe differences in the meaning of words; pursue "word conversion" from the relationship of deeper stage between words.
