Translating The Other

This paper studies the representational strategy of the image of cultural Other during a specific historical and cultural context by analyzing all the texts on "foreign lands" in the Short Story Magazine (1910-1920) as a whole, in the purpose of presenting an original scene through which a complicated process of cultural conflux between Chinese traditional culture and Western culture can be retrieved and studied with extended details.The representation and construction of the "foreign lands" are fulfilled by the strategically arrangement of a variety of translated scripts, some of which are novels while the rest can be categorized as news reports, essays and brief information respectively. Photos and drawings showing different aspects of Western societies are also included.Yet this representational process is strongly influenced by many factors, such as the cultural attitudes towards the Other held by different authors or editors, the needs and aesthetic tastes of the readers, the unexpected influence of incidents of great historical importance and the cultural "stereotypes" toward foreigners hidden within traditional Chinese culture.
