The study on the communication of ancient Chinese popular fiction is on the explanation of developmental law and the influence on the factors of the popular fiction communication. The communication process of ancient Chinese popular fiction developed upwards, also it was the interactional process among the factors of the communication. The dissertation will explore each period of the communication of ancient Chinese popular fiction through the communication surroundings, communicators, communication content, medium and communication channel, accepters, communication effect. Through the longitudinal and horizontal analysis, it will fully display the whole communication process of the ancient Chinese popular fiction.Popular fiction before Song dynasty was a slow and embryonic stage. The rising of the status of the civilian impelled the starting of the popular fiction. Before Song Dynasty, the communicators had developed from the amateur to the professional, oral communication gradually specialized and the written communicator also appeared in the middle and low stratum. Before Song Dynasty, the ancient Chinese popular fiction got the most influence from the folk literature, epic literature and religious culture. Ancient Chinese popular fiction finished the leap from the language medium to the character medium. The readership and audience increased greatly and the townsfolk became the main readers of the ancient popular fiction in Tang Dynasty. The popular fiction before Song Dynasty inflected the social phenomenon, facilitated the communication of the civilian's thoughts, religious culture and Chinese culture, and was of great significance for the development of the popular fiction in Song Dynasty.This is in the early part of the ancient Chinese popular fiction in Song and Yuan Dynasty. The growing up of the new citizens and the development of the business and economy cultivated more communicators and readers. Story-told had been mature in the Song Dynasty and its communication was very active. They had get rid of the maneuver of the Buddhism and taken the life of the new citizens as their communication content. The prohibition of story-told in Yuan Dynasty urged the development of the popular fiction at very fast speed. The popular fiction in Yuan Dynasty was inscribed in the bookshops with a printing workshop, especially in the telling historical stories and the Xiaoshuo. The text of stories in Song and Yuan Dynasty gradually developed their own style and system in the communication process, which laid the solid foundation for the development of the popular fiction in the later times. As the forerunner, the popular fiction in Song and Yuan Dynasty was used for the reference for other arts. The spread of the ancient Chinese popular fiction in Korea, Japan and Vietnam played the ecbolic role in the generation of the popular fiction in other countries.The main reasons of the slow development of the popular fiction were the breakage of the war in Late Yuan and early Ming and the policy of"active inducting and high-handed strike"in early Ming. Many story-tellers played active roles in the communication of popular fictions, among whom the blind men took up more than fifty percent. With the influence of imperial power, the content of communication of popular fiction changed. Moralization was added into the popular fictions and literators with the aim of moralization joined in the communication. Thus the popular fictions were provided with a team of high-quality creators, which promoted the art level of the popular fiction and drove its development. Because of the lag of the printing, hand-copied books were the main communication way. The inscription of the popular fiction began though it had not been widely used. The readership in the early Ming Dynasty was wider and the merchants became the main readers of the popular fictions. Compared with that in Yuan Dynasty, the language communication of popular fiction renewed and developed in early Ming Dynasty. Classical Chinese fiction was influenced by the popular fictions whose external communication had greatly developed.Since the Zhengde times, the communication of ancient Chinese popular fiction had become mature with the infirmness of the ruling-class's power and the firmness of the citizens'strength. In this period, the communicators enlarged which included the high-level writers hired by the bookshops. What's more, the inscription publishers also enlarged and they covered the official and private one and the bookshop was the main communicator. With the operation of the bookshop, the communication of the popular fiction in the late Ming Dynasty took on the commercial motivation. The flourishing commercial economy and the fast development of the printing made the channel of the communication of the popular fiction more smoothly and the role of the communicators were of gradual perspicuity. The popular fictions progressed with the direction of common customs, individuation and interest. Both the communication content and the quantity of works had greatly enlarged. The literature statues of the popular fictions rose and was identified and its literature theory also became mature. Its readers also increased a lot. The communication effect of the popular fictions was obvious in this period and had great influence on literature, social field and the overseas.The ancient Chinese popular fiction was at the height of power and splendor. The communication channel had been mature. The combination of the factors was also fluent. The quantity, subject matter and the quality had reached the highest level. The owner of the bookshop held the consequence. That they and the writers schemed to make the popular fictions was one of the characteristics in this period. The flexible and changefully management mode and the multiple communication channel provided convenient condition for the communication of the popular fiction in the early Qing Dynasty. The ruling class'placate and suppression policies had the negative influence on the communication of the popular fictions. Because the readers of the popular novels had been everywhere, it was impossible to ban its communication. In this period the ancient Chinese popular fictions had great influence on the other literature forms and its transitional versions were abundant abroad and started the communication upsurge in Europe.The popular fictions in the late Qing Dynasty had gradually declined and the new popular fictions gradually prospered. Its transformation went with the dramatic change of the society. Before Jiawu War, due to a few limitations of the communication factors, the traditional popular fiction declined to a certain degree in some areas. But this is only a partial and temporary decline, and the communication of popular fictions did not have a substantial decline. After Jiawu War, with the development and evolution of some factors such as social and cultural environment, the communication elements of popular fictions had changed sharply. The popular fictions had become the tool to save the nation. The intellectuals and the ardours used the communication media to arouse mobs and turn on their intelligence. The readership had enlarged owing to the transformation of the intellectuals'literature concept, the loose communication surroundings of the concession and the drop of the price of the books and newspaper caused by the lithography relief printing plate. Popular fictions brought the great influence on the political and cultural thought and the popular fictions in later times but its influence abroad faded away.It can be seen that the advancement of the communication of the popular fiction didn't cease since it began in Tang Dynasty, even though the prohibition and damage and the suppression could not prevent its development. Each low tide initiated a more flourishing high tide, for example, the prohibition in Yuan Dynasty impelled the development of the communication of popular fictions; the guide and suppression in the early Ming Dynasty encouraged more disseminators; the prohibition and damage in Qing Dynasty caused another climax. All these lied in the communication and any man-made disadvantage could not stop its development.The communication process of ancient Chinese fiction was not successful. During the developmental process, there were ups and downs. What's more, the process was not stagnant, it was the process of advancement. Furthermore, it developed more and more rapidly.Each period of the communication of ancient Chinese fictions was the seedtime in which each communication factors were organically combined and stimulated one another. Therefore, it was of great importance to investigate them respectively because the slight changes in one factor or in one period would cause the dramatic change of the popular fictions and thus touched the evaluative course and developmental speed of the whole ancient Chinese fictions. For example, the application of the bamboo paper and the variety of the letterform had the far-reaching influence on the communication of the ancient Chinese popular fiction.It is obvious that the communication developmental process of ancient Chinese fiction was combined organically and stimulated one another and was the result of conformity and development of the communication factors in each period. From the perspective of development, the communication developmental process of the ancient Chinese fictions was complex and varied. From the logistic point of view, the communication developmental processes were closely connected. Therefore, the dissertation adopts the method of tackling the essence of the communication development from the idea of the factors, emphasizing particularly on the basis of analysis at large, handholding the masterstroke in the numerous and complicated communication factors, and thus realizes the unification of the specifics and the whole.The research for the fist time longitudinally opens the communication developmental process of the ancient Chinese fictions systematically and makes a horizontal analysis to each period. It is also the first one to make the fully longitudinal and horizontal analysis to the ancient Chinese popular fictions from the perspective of communication. At the same time, the present study integrates other subjects'research method and mode to make the comprehensive investigation on the communication of ancient Chinese popular fictions, hoping the new method and mode is valuable to the cross study on the media studies, ancient Chinese literature and other fields.
