This thesis is composed of an overall observation of Jinling Calligraphy during the 15th to 16th century often neglected in the history of calligraphy, and an analysis of the makeup and socializing of the calligraphers in Jinling, and the significance of their calligraphic works in the history of calligraphy. At that time the calligraphers in Jinling played an important part in the formation and high prestige of the calligraphic works of Wumen calligraphers and the development of seal cutting. Since Jinling was a hub of calligraphers of the Ming Dynasty, Jinling had witnessed the prosperity and decline of calligraphy of the Ming Dynasty. Inscription of Calligraphic Works in Jinling is the first to inscribe calligraphic works. This thesis is made up of seven parts.Chapter I deals with the origin, current situation, significance of the topic, the definition of key concepts, related reference material and ways of approaching the topic.Chapter II is a brief description of the geographical position, cultural conditions and the calligraphic traditions of the Jinling District, and the context in which Jinling Calligraphy emerges and develops.Chapter III aims at sorting out reference material concerning Jinling calligraphers during the 15th to 16th century and analyzing the characteristics of the makeup of these calligraphers.Chapter IV elaborates on the fact that Wumen calligraphers socialized with Jinling calligraphers in Jinling that had the favorable geological and cultural environment which many scholars admired. Their communication influenced Wumen calligraphers a lot, thus the significance of their communication is also my concern in the chapter.Chapter V focuses on the characteristics of three different stages in the development of Jinling calligraphy from an aesthetic perspective. Seal characters by Jinling calligraphers played an important part in the development of seal cutting during the middle and later stages of the Ming Dynasty. A research is also made on some connoisseurs in paintings and calligraphic works in Jinling during the Jiajing period and their influence on Jinling calligraphy.Chapter VI approaches the edition, characteristics and historic significance of Inscription of Calligraphic Works in Jinling.Chapter VII is a summary of the part Jinling calligraphy plays in the history of calligraphy, the reasons of its decline. And I also reflect on the regional observation, studies of well-known calligraphers.
