A Study Of Zhang Tianyi's Satire Novels

Zhang Tianyi was one of the most famous satirical novelists in the history of modern Chinese literature. Owe to the unique language style and complicated thought connotation,Zhang's work plays a significant role in the modern literary circles,and there is no substitute for the position. In this study,the early satirical novels (before the founding of the PRC) of Zhang Tianyi were studied through the description of his writing course. Based on his novels,the evolvement, themes, aesthetic characteristics and artistic features of his novels were re-combined and interpreted comprehensively. Comparative study between his novels and other satirical writer's works was carried out and the writing theories of this sort of literatures were discussed in-depth. Hope this study can bring about an objective and comprehensive understanding to Zhang Tianyi's satirical novel.The paper is mainly composed by these paragraphs:The basis for topic selection, the significance of the study and the existing researches pertinent to Zhang Tianyi in the last 10 years were presented in introduction. There were a few studies about the satirical works of Zhang in the past. However, these studies often are limited to one or several works, and these works were studied as ordinary literatures rather than "satirical" ones. Thus,the comprehensive treatise rather than individual research is necessary to understand the unique value of Zhang's satirical novels.Chapter one,the development process of Zhang Tianyi satirical novels was outlined. According to the chronological order of works and the experiences of Zhang's,the changing track and inherent relationship of his novels were found out. Through the review of some of the works, the main character of Zhang Tianyi's ironic novels was shown. His satirical novel creation started from 1922. After several years of exploration,his works gradually matured in the early of 1930s and the main style of his novels basically finalized till the late of 1930s. His works evolved from farce to sarcasm and then to humor finally.Chapter two, Multiple topics characteristic Zhang Tianyi atirical novels was discussed. Zhang Tianyi's ironic works touched the all aspects of life, including finance, politics, moral, cultural and human nature, which exposed and scoffed the darkness and decay of social reality in 1930's and 1940's. As a left-wing writer with political responsibility, Zhang Tianyi not only condemmned the political defects of that time,but also criticized the ignorance and servility of Chinese nationals,which revealed the evil nature of human. The huge subject of novel was latent in the nifty satire.Chapter three, the style of Zhang Tianyi satirical novels and its forming causes were analyzed. It was found that the formation of the frosty, sharp, crisp and ironic style of Zhang was closely related to his personality, psychology and the traditional satire culture of home and abroad. Zhang learned a lot from ancient Chinese satire novels and the modern works of Lu Xun. Foreign literatures such as the works of Dickens, Chekhov and Gogol also greatly benefited him.Chapter four, the artistic features of Zhang's satirical novel was studied. His "sketch" technique in the arrangement of text was mainly discussed. The combination use of omniscient narration & limiting narration and the use of unique children's perspective were analyzed according to the Western Narrative. Besides, the contribution to literature and status of zhang's novel were identified from the view of satirical works of China --- his satirical works effectively promoted the development of modern satirical novel from 1920's to 1940's.The concluding taking care of the introduction part, make the further analysis the lonely reason in the present literature accepted of Zhang Tianyi. Zhang Tianyi encounters the frosty reception with the present social environment, the literature microenvironment as well as the writer create the flaw related.Zhang Tianyi's novels are not only submerged by modern society's popular consumption culture, moreover dispels the political awareness shape with the literary world the tendency to contradict, novels itselves text good and bad coexisting is also a reason.This paper is a comprehensive understanding to Zhang's satirical works and their unique artistic style. It is very helpful to study the development of satirical novel in modern China and the relation between the works of China and abroad.
