George Gordon Byron,the great British Romantic poet in early 19 th century, is widely known as the representative of Romantic literature. Lu Xun regarded him as the sovereign of Romantic literature. He wrote many poems in his life, which had great influence on the Europe politics and literature in 19 th century. He advocated passion and imagination. His poems are eulogized by people and make Romanticism influence the whole world. Byron is not only a great poet, but also a warrior fight for ideal. He actively and bravely took part in the revolution, including Greek National Liberation Movement, and became one of the leaders. His legendary life shines just like a bright star in the literary world and human history, which is always worth of interpretation. Therefore, a research about his poetry has great value. As the essence of his poetry, satirical art is the key point of researching Byron's poetry.The thesis is divided into four parts:The first chapter discusses the formation and development of satirical art in Byron's poetry. It is demonstrated from three aspects. Firstly, making a summary about satirical art of British's poetry. Secondly, making a research on Byron's “The temperament of irony”. Lastly, classifying and analyzing the satirical art of Byron's poetry in different times. In order to tease out a clear structure of Byron's satirical art, the author analyzes the reason of the formation of Byron's satirical art in the following aspects: social circumstance, the tradition of satirical poetry, the writer's temperament and the style of poetry writing.The second chapter is mainly making a inductive generalization about the satirical theme of Byron's poetry. To dig out the social realistic meaning of his satirical theme, the author demonstrates 5 Byron's famous poems, that is, The Vision of Judgment?Bronze century?Don Juan?Childe Harold's Pilgrimage?The Cain, from the view of king, war,humanity, love and religion to explain his satirical theme.The third part is about the means of satire. In this part, the author explains how Byron uses the sacred weapon--satire and handle the satirical art. Byron's poetry combine his broad satire theme with his means of satire successfully, which reveals his satire wisdom as a genius poet. This chapter makes a classification about Byron's satirical art and a inductive generalization from the view of the means of satire of subjective explanation and objective presentation.The last chapter analyzes the ironic style of Byron's poetry. Byron's ironic style has his own characteristic. In this chapter, his ironic style is demonstrated from two aspects: the objective truth of irony and the subjective freedom of irony.
