| Modernization has gradually become a social development trend. Modernization has been a dream of the Chinese people for one and a half centuries. The urbanization, one of the must important part of the modernization, now becomes a big topic for the people who are concerned. Based on the goal of building a socialism with Chinese characteristics, sticking to the rules of combining theories and practice, macrocosmic research and microcosmic research together, adapting Marxism and Dengxiaoping's theories as its guile, this article tries to analyze the modernization of the Chinese big cities, work out its solution and provide service for it.The article has got eight parts apart from its preface.The first part is mainly about the general theories of modernization, thus provided theory foundation for Chinese city modernization .The world modernization has experienced three big waves, they are the original model, the latter one and the new created model, There are three schools of the modernization theories, the western developed countries theories the developing countries theories and the global development theories. The knowledge of modernization for modem china includes western modernization, Chinese modernization and modernization of socialism with Chinese characteristics. The Chinese modernization has experienced four periods which are the feudal defending era, the capitalism era, the Chinese socialism era and the socialism with Chinese characteristics era. China must combine the general rules of urbanization with its own circumstance and work out its own way of urbanization.The second part is mainly to analyze the position and effect of major cities in modernization and the inevitability of the major cities' modernization in china .A major city here is a city that has comprehensive functions and also plays an important role in the country's economics. Major cities didn't appear until the capitalism society came into being. In the 21st century, the development of Chinese major cities will speed up, intemalization and modernization develop side by side, city culture construction etc will also have a bright future. Major cities are the symbol of the development of a society, play a special role in china's modernization.The third part sets up some certain standards for the major cities' modernization after a careful study or the advanced international standards. Major cities' modernization must include economy, society, culture, basic facility and environment modernization which this article has careful considered and sets up 25 standards for it. After explaining the definition of modernization this article also sets up a goal for Chinese major cities' modernization incomparing with the statistics of the developed countries major cities.The fourth part tries to work out the way for major cities' economy modernization Firstly it tries to reform economy structure.
