It is an inevitable trend for traditional forestry, or conventional forestry, which is characteristic of timber-use-orientated, to gradually withdraw from its historical stage and be replaced by sustainable forestry. The profound motive of such transfer lies in the structural change of modern demand to forests.Harmonization and optimization of two basic types of functions, direct productive functions and indirect ecological functions, of forest ecosystem, are the key to emancipate fundamental functions of forests in the course of sustainable development. The practice of Forestry Classification Management (FCM) will contribute to create both a technical and an institutional platform for the healthy developments of a relatively independent non-commercial forestry, as well as of a relatively independent commercial forestry, to effectively push forward the transfer of traditional forestry into sustainable forestry, to optimize the distribution of forestry resources, and to achieve the realization of the dual feature (industrial feature and public welfare feature) of modern forestry.China's forestry, overall, is still at its early stage of the construction of FCM frame and the establishment of Forest Ecological Benefits Compensation (FEBC) institution. A long way stretches before China's traditional forestry to be reformed and go to sustainable forestry, and, related issues in China's Southern-Collective-Forest-Zone, such as in Fujian province, also have special significations to be expounded. This research is carried out and based on a particular research direction, Resource & Environment Direction. The paper first gives an in-depth analysis of the features of sustainable forestry, and then put emphasis on the discussion of concept and motivation of FCM, spatial organization of classified management areas formed within FCM frame, and those issues related to FEBC, which plays a key role in the construction of FCM system. As far as FCM is concerned, reform actions must be as systematic as possible, and should be root-based. How to integrate various classified management areas at some spatial scale, such as at watershed level, at landscape level or at region level, etc., is a weak point of FCM study and practice. Research on spatial-temporal scale dependent features of forests management should be strengthened. As far as FEBC is concerned, operation stability, state of law-protected and low social cost are highlight points in the process of policy design.Mainstream paradigm of the study of two basic topics of this paper, FCM and FEBC, are basically economics. This research, to some extent, is a supplement to mainstream paradigm because of its geographic perceptive taken in the study.
