Urbanization is an inevitable trend of society's progress, which has great significance to the economic development and evolution of society of China. Expediting Urbanization is not only the radical method to change dual economy to a whole, but also the strategic way to spur effective demands and facilitate a continuous and fast economic increase. Meanwhile, urbanization helps to narrow the gap between the country and city and coordinate the development between districts, to prompt of industry structure and improve the quality of economy, to protect environment &resources and realize sustainable development, to realize economic globalization and improve the ability to compete.For a long time, especially after the policy of reforming and opening, the issue of urbanization has been received the extensive concerns of a lot of disciplines. Currently, under the macro-circumstances that China has entered WTO, the domestic economic development has entered a new historical period and urbanization process is accelerating, urbanization regain the concern and be the focus of academic and practical fields. In the writer's opinion, it is necessary to study, summarize and rescan the theories of urbanization, to review, organize and analyze the practice of it under the new historical circumstances.Based on referring exist study, the writer systematically made an overall analysis on urbanization, adopting the research methods of from theory to practice, from generalization to specification, and from periphery to the core of the problem. First of all, the concept of urbanization and its measurement, along with the development in the word, are stated. Then the writer analyses the motivation mechanism of urbanization in an all-round way. And then comes the emphasis of the thesis, that is, (1) description of the development and status quo, (2) and modes of urbanization in China, (3) analysis of institution optimization and innovation. At last the writer forecasts the developing trend of urbanization in China simply, based on the above all analyze.The following are the main points of the thesis:1. The scientific concept of urbanization should be the concise summary of all kind of factors such as its cause, process, essence, results etc, and should be systematic, comprehensive and applicability to multi-discipline. With this in mind, the writer gives her definition of urbanization, that is, urbanization is a process of achieving unity and harmony of city and country, during which with the improvement of productivity and non-agriculturalizing of industry structure, on one hand, produce factors aggregate towards city, therefore upgrading the city system, and helping to achieve modernization, on the other hand, the modes of producing and living in rural area are geared to that of city. As for the process in China, to name it urbanization is more scientific and practical than townizaion. Generally, there are two kinds of means of measuring urbanization, the means of single index and the means of composite index. Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages, and therefore has been used on different occasions. The cardinal principle to build composite index is to "select important indexes and give up minor ones". 2. The process of world urbanization originated from the industrial revolution in the midof 18th century have undergone three stages so far: stage of rising, stage of basically realizing, and stage of universally implement stage. Urbanization between developed and developing countries has shown great differences. We can divide urbanization modes into many types according to different standards. Adopting what kind of mode is historical, dynamical and multifarious. Quantity-change evolves into quality-change is the basic rule of urbanization, and that can be divided into a series of specific rules connected with each other.
