Disparities And Their Factors Of Regional Economy

Since the economic-oriented strategy was implemented in 1978, China has obtained rapidly economic development speed and its economic status in the world has been enhancing since 1978. However, many regional problems has been coming forth as a result of over-emphasis on economy benefits, among those the disparity of regional economy has always been the hot topic not only in China but also in the other country.Adopted different methods and different points of view, researchers usually reached different conclusions, which were controversial to the disparities of regional economy in China, and the researches were mostly focus on the three belts (the East, the Middle and the West) and the disparities between provinces, fewer researchers were focus on the disparities of inner provinces. The above researches didn't entirely reflect the real disparities of regional economy in China. Based on the case study, the thesis systemically studied on the disparities and their factors of regional economy in Jiangsu province, located in the coastal, to provide scientific basis for regional economy development of Jiangsu province and the other province in China.Firstly, the thesis reviewed the non-balanced theory and the convergence theory, analyzed and compared the index and methods of measuring disparities of regional economy.Secondly, the thesis analyzed the tendency of disparities in Jiangsu province from 1978 to 2000. The disparities tendency of three scales, which is the southern Jiangsu and the middle Jiangsu and the northern Jiangsu, the 13 administrative regions, the 64 counties, were basically becoming wider and wider under unstable situation, based on the fixed and the current price, measured on the output index and the living index.Thirdly, the thesis decomposed the factors formed the disparities. Adopted the variance coefficient and the Theil index, the thesis decomposed the factors of disparities of Per Capita GDP (PGDP) and Per Capita Income. Viewed on the industries, the effects of primary industry influenced to the disparities of PGDP was rarely, the effects of secondary industry influenced to the disparities of PGDP was decisive but the effects were becoming smaller and smaller yearly, the effects of tertiary industry influenced to the disparities of PGDP was second but the effects were becoming wider and wider yearly; Viewed on the three belts, the disparities of inter-three-belt (among the southern Jiangsu, the middle Jiangsu and the northern Jiangsu) was decisive factor to the disparities of PGDP; Viewed on the urban and the rural, the disparities of inter-urban-rural was decisive factor to PerCapita Income and it was becoming wider and wider yearly.Fourthly, the thesis analyzed the convergence of regional economy in Jiangsu province based on the economy growth convergence theory and method. From 1978 to 2000, there was not σ-convergence of the PGDP growth in Jiangsu province; From 1984 to 1993 and since 1999, there was not σ-convergence of the per capital net income of rural households growth, but from 1993 to 1999, there was a -convergence; From 1978 to 2000, there was not absolute β-convergence of the PGDP growth in Jiangsu province, but there was conditional β-convergence and the convergence intensity was feeble, half-lifecycle is comparative long, the least half -time of the undeveloped region will catch up with the developed region was 115 years; From 1994 to 2000, there was club-convergence hi the northern Jiangsu and the Middle Jiangsu, but there was not club-convergence in the northern Jiangsu.Fifthly, the thesis analyzed and verified the factors of disparities of regional economy. Based on case study, the thesis concluded that the factors of the market-level, the industry -level, the employed ratio, the original gift of human capital and the ratio of invest made the disparities of regional economy in Jiangsu province wider and wider from 1990 to 2000; the industry-level (the transition of industry structure) and the ratio of invest were the important factors of the club-convergen...
