As Shanghai is endeavoring to become one of the central cosmopolites in Asia-Pacific and West Pacific region, it witnessed rapid economic growth in the 1990s and profound changes have taken place in the city outlook ever since. Henceforth, this thesis aims to review and analyze the past performance of industrial structural transformation in Shanghai and present certain strategic choices in the new round of industrial reshaping under the background of strategic restructuring of national economy as a whole. This thesis starts from the introduction of fundamental theories on industrial structures, and proceeds to discuss the impacts of urban economic agglomeration and industrial clusters on the formation of industrial structure, and by doing so points out the differences between urban industrial structure and national industrial structure. The paper then elaborates on a couple of methodologies and tools such as comparative advantage, competitive advantage and opportunity cost to make comparison between and selection of urban industrial structures in the meantime. The empirical analysis of New York, Tokyo, and Hong Kong proves what the paper has identified as the main features and development trend of urban industrial structure. The essay continues to carry out in-depth analysis over changes in industrial structural transformation in Shanghai as well as the development of primary industry, secondary industry, tertiary industry, and sectors within the latter two industries. Investment, demand and technological progress are later examined to pinpoint the internal factors that triggered industrial restructuring. More emphasis has been laid on foreign investment and technological advancement, which implies that foreign capital has been playing a bigger role than technological development in influencing industrial reshaping in the 1990s. Then the thesis evaluates the actual performance of industrial structural transformation in Shanghai in the 1990s in the respect of factors (capital, labor, technology) utility, industrial competitiveness, and development strategies. It also gives due importance to the study on the industrial allocation and cooperation between Shanghai and Yangtze Delta for the time being. At last it comes up with the value, strategic choice and measures for the new round of industrial structural transformation. In consideration of the inertia and path reliance of economic development, many questions still need to be thought over and properly dealt with in the long process of industrial structure to be re-formed into the final model. The innovations of the thesis lie in the following three respects:In the first place, this paper stresses that great differences exist between urban economy and national economy, therefore resulting in different development mode in their respective industrial structures. However, the previous theorem of development economics on industrial structure is insufficient to provide explanation and guidance to the development of Shanghai's industrial structure. As a conclusion drawn in this paper, the urban industrial structure mode should be based on its functionabilities. As Shanghai seeks to secure its position as an cosmopolitan city, it should remain attentive to the pattern of industrial development in other pivot cities as well as to the actual cultivation of urban industries. Secondly, as a thesis mainly engaged in empirical study dependent upon large quantities of concrete and detailed statistics, it systematically analyzes and compares the industrial structure in cosmopolitan cities like New York, London, Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, which provides a subjective reference to the development of industries in Shanghai. Likewise, substantial statistics and models are also employed for the purpose of quantitative study of the industrial structure in Shanghai. The paper finally analyzes and evaluates the performance of Shanghai in its industrial structural evolution, and discusses about related academic ideas and opinions such as whet...
