As an important course in economic activity, the consumption will perform a more and more outstanding function with the rapid growth of economy. After the 21st century, the shortage economic era had completely passed in our country, The seller's market was replaced by buyer's one, where the supply of most commodities exceeded their demand. The market competition intensified, and the deflation appeared in recent years. The distending financial and the positive monetary policy, such as lowering the interest rate of bank for eight times since 1998, had been taken continuously for several years. A certain result was obtained, but it is not ideal, furthermore, it isn't permanent. It is the ultimate power of economic growth to enhance the domestic demand, and it is lasting and long-time to drive and lead the positive consumption of residents. This dissertation made a demonstrative study on the evolvement. characteristic, laws and affecting factors of Chinese residents' consumption behavior after the opening and reform on the basis of the newly classical consumption theory and the practical condition of China.Firstly, a qualitative analysis is made on the consumption behavior of Chinese residents before and after the opening and reform. According to consumer's behavior theory, this chapter analyzes the exterior circumstance and the characteristic of Chinese residents' consumption behavior on the basis of three periods. So the assumption for quantitative study is put forward, that is, Chinese residents' consumption behaviors in the different periods of plan economy, two-track economy and market economy respectively applies to three kinds of theory which is the absolute income theory of Keynesian, the relative income theory of J.Duesenberry, the permanent income theory of M.Friedman.Secondly, a quantitative study is made on the factors affecting the consumption behavior of Chinese residents during different periods. In 1952-1978, the Chinese residents' consumption behaviors were mainly decided by their up-to-date income, which is short-viewed, one period, and there were strongly restricted by budget. The consumption of rural residents is influenced by their practicality income that year and therate of exchange between industrial and agricultural products besides their monetary income. In 1979-1992, the consumption behaviors of both urban residents and rural residents are of the character of irreversibility and spanning current period. The subsidy has a weak influence on the consumption behavior of urban residents, so has the foregone consumption of rural residents on current period one. But from a nationwide point of view, the foregone consumption has a certain effect on current consumption. After 1993, the influence of permanent and transitory income on consumption behavior is strongly explainable. The marginal propensity to consume of all the residents' permanent income is less than that of temporary income. On the other hand, that of urban residents is larger than the rural. On the contrary, the marginal propensity of temporary income is less than that of rural residents. The elasticity of permanent income of all the residents' consumption is larger than that of temporary income, and the income elasticity to consume of urban residents' permanent and temporary income are all larger than that of rural residents.Thirdly, a study is made on the characteristic of evolvement about Chinese residents' consumption behavior. This chapter explains the evolving trend of consumption structure the speed of alteration, the characteristic of change in the marginal propensity to consume of eight kinds of commodities of both urban and rural residents after the opening and reform. The result is obtained that the consumption expenditure of these commodities has increased steadily with the consumption structure improving obviously and the alteration speed of that quickening progressively. The proportion of living necessity tends to descend, whereas that of enjoying and developing commodities tends to ascend. The change of cons...
