Land use change that is a very complicated process is one aspect of the most dramatic global changes. Land use change affected not only by natural factors but also by social and economic ones has become the focus in the field of environmental research from home and abroad because its comprehension and regional characteristics. Especially from 1990's, population's expanding and land resources' misusing has resulted in ecology deterioration and nature unbalance, even have affected social development in a right way. In term of factors mentioned above, people have attached more importance to the research of land use change and all the people working in the field have accepted the idea of sustainability of land use step by step. The Yellow River Delta that is one of three most largest estuary delta in China locates an intersect area between the Economy Circle around the Bohai Sea and the Economy Belt of the Yellow River valley. Natural resources like petroleum, natural gas, bittern and terrestrial heat enrich the Yellow River Delta area. Moreover, the natural endow of wetland resources, marine products resources and land resources abound in this area. Because of severe land use change and all the aspects mentioned above, the Yellow River Delta has become one of the heated areas for land use change. By means of research of land use change and sustainability assessment, policy suggestion on land use in the Yellow River Delta and reference and experience on how to use land in other areas can be given. And in this paper, the research objective on land use is to understand the present situation of land use in this area, find factors that affect land use and address land use model according to land use characteristics of the Yellow River Delta through analysis and evaluation of land use change in this area. The analysis of the driving factors of land use change in the Yellow River Delta appears first in the paper. The two aspects of nature and socio-economy affecting land use are taken as the main driving forces. Furthermore, natural aspect includes three parts of terrain feature, soil and hydrology and socio-economic factor is composed of population, economic development, urbanization, and policy that have influence on land use in Dongying City. The affection difference of all the factors on land use method and land use intensity does exist and natural factors are the basis of land use, even prioritize land use to some extent. In general, the natural factors have deep influence on land use in this area.Secondly, in term of land use dynamic change model, the amount change of land use, the space structural change of land use, the extent change of land use, area difference of land use and the reason why land use change occurred in the Yellow River Delta have been fully analyzed. The characteristics of land use change in this area are increase of arable land , urban construction and residents in rural areas and considerable decrease of natural grassland, furthermore the trend of land use type reducing to one occurred. The spatial change of land use structure shaping gradient from along the coast to the inland is one aspect of character of land use change. And the cause of land use change has relation with natural conditions, land development history, land reservation resources and socio-economic conditions.Thirdly, with the direction of sustainable land use theory, fuzzy theory and the method of spatialdata conversion to data of grid model have been applied to assess the sustainability of land use system in the Yellow River Delta. And sustainability situation of Land use system wholly reach middle level. The two assessment methods have been compared and on the basis of it, the sustainable assessment method based on spatial data of grid model is more accurate. Thus, if the sustainable assessment of regional land use system is needed, the one based on spatial data of grid model can be basis of sustainable assessment with the help of fuzzy theory test, and briefly to say, two methods will be integrated to apply i...
