As a professional subject and Chinese science, the research on Chinese prison science began in the last stage of Qing Dynasty when western laws were introduced into China. Since then, with the great change of traditional culture, social structure, nation type and academic state, the study of Chinese prison science has undergone winding journey as other social sciences have. Few people show any interest in the research of its academic history and system because of prison's special status, its complicated characteristics and the academic situation formed through hundred years. The author has made every effort in collecting and sorting out the historical material of the last stage of Qing Dynasty for the research on the Chinese prison science. The study has completed the statement and analysis of the historical events happened in the past hundred years as well as the changing orbit of theory. The research idea of this subject embodies in mainly: 1. On the premise of summary of ancient China's prison history with traditional knowledge, research mainly the recent hundred years' history of Chinese prison science. 2. Through collecting and sorting out the representative works in all periods in the prison history, make a careful "text" comprehension and comparative analysis. 3. After consulting and analyzing relevant materials, offer detailed statement and brief summary in chapters. 4. In accordance with the result of research, offer main research view and conclusion through the overall statement in "introduction". This study adds up to 6 chapters besides " introduction ". It can be divided into three parts according to the research target and historical stages. Part one: prison science of the last stage of Qing Dynasty (1-2 chapters). Part two: prison science of the Republic of China (3-4 chapters). Part three: prison science of new China (5-6 chapters). In addition, there are three "appendices ". â… . Brief Account of the Main Content Part One: Prison Science of the Last Stage of Qing Dynasty The last stage of Qing Dynasty was the boundary period of ancient Chinese prison science and modern Chinese prison science. Since the last stage of Qing Dynasty, the academic study of prison, as one of political strength, has been regarded as the need of a country to construct its modern history. In order to see clearly the difference of two kinds of academic types and the changing course from before and after Qing Dynasty, chapter one makes a brief account for the conception and knowledge of ancient Chinese prison science according to the written historical data in shapes of different symbols, such as, legend, characters, custom, institution, etc. In this part the author shows us the whole picture and main characteristics of ancient Chinese prison knowledge and its final declined destiny. Then it explains prison science from different aspects, for example, the form of the thought of prison innovation, cultural crisis in the last stage of Qing Dynasty, the traditional academic transformation, the introduction of the impression of western prison, and finally probes into the historical course and condition which gave the birth of modern prison in the last stage of Qing dynasty. Chapter two introduces not only Shen JiaBen's thoughts of prison innovation and the academic activities but also OuShu and DongKang's version of XiaoHeZiCi's works " Prison Science". TuJingYu is mentioned in this chapter, too. In this chapter the author analyses the way in which the western law was introduced into China via Japan and makes a systematic exposition of ShenJiaBen and XiaoHeZiCi's thoughts of prison, achievement in academic research and contribution to the initial study of prison science in the last stage of Qing Dynasty. Part Two: Prison Science of the Republic of China The study of prison science of the Republic of China is the continuation of the study started in the last stage of Qing Dynasty.
