This dissertation tries to answer the following questions: (1) what kind of strategies and policies did ASEAN countries (shortened as ASEAN infra) took and are taking towards U.S.? (2) How did and do these strategies influence China? (3) What are the strategic options for China? The author argues that ASEAN gradually took the following strategies towards U.S. in the post-Cold War period: (1) to "drag" U.S. in the field of military and national security to balance the potential threat from Japan, China and India; (2) facing the world democracy wave, the political pressure and interference from U.S. and EU countries, ASEAN 's strategy is resistance and struggle ;(3) in the field of economy, ASEAN strived for the capital, technologies and access to the market of U.S., but tried to decrease the degree of dependence on U.S.;(4) complex of military, political and economic strategies, that means mitigating the political pressure and interference from U.S. and striving for economic interests through military and security cooperation with U.S., getting the security promises and mitigating the political pressure and interference from U.S. with economic interests. As a whole, dependence and resistance are two distinct characteristics of ASEAN 's strategies towards U.S.This dissertation claims that ASEAN 's strategies towards U.S. influence China both positively and negatively. As for the strategic options for China, the author suggests that China should manage U.S. and ASEAN respectively, and put forward some strategies and policies towards U.S. and ASEAN.This author tries to analyze the explainability of some relative international relation theories on ASEAN-U.S. relations and ASEAN countries' strategies towards U.S., and argues that "Balance of Threat" ( "Selective Balance" may be the exact words and expressions ) and "Economic Interdependence" are two of the most important variables.
