At present, the development of Chinese universities is in a new historical period. The important transformation of Chinese higher education, which is to a connotative development mode led by quality and structure, makes a deep change in university's environment of resource, market and institution. The existence condition, development potential, organizational performance and competition position rely on the internal resource and capability more and more. The competition based on resource and capability has been a new paradigm of competition between universities. The formation, accumulation, exploitation and creation of university's resource and capability are a dynamic process to improve internal value and coordinate external environment. Its essence is a process to renew and transform organization mechanism and a process of university organizational innovation based on strategy, structure and culture.Based on a perspective of resource and capability, and making university organizational innovation as a research object, this research synthetically uses resource-based theory, resource dependency theory, and organization capital theory, to define the scientific connotation of university organization, explore the mechanism of action between university organizational innovation and university system of resource and capability, study the logic relationship among university organizational innovation, performance and advantage in competition, and then find the characteristics and mode of university organizational innovation, and the tactics how a university chooses a innovation mode to promote its performance and competitive ability.This research defines and classifies the university's resource and capability, analyzes the relationship between resource and capability in university, puts forward the conceptions of university organizational resource and capital, defines the connotation of university organizational innovation based on the investment of organizational capital, creates a logic relational model of "organizational innovation-organizational capital (dynamic capabilities)-advantage in competition", establishes a the theory framework of university organizational innovation based on the perspective of resource and capability, analyzes the basic factors of university organizational innovation and theirs relationship, proposes a three-dimension structure of "strategy-structure-culture" and the relationship and linkage between these factors. By the multi-dimension analysis of university organization's characteristics, this research puts forward university organization's essential characteristics, basic attributes, functional characteristics, structural characteristics, and cultural characteristics; Based on university's characteristics, the research analyzes both the internal and external motivation, advances a four-dimension structure of motivation for university organizational innovation, including "mission-leading, knowledge-driving, government-pushing, and market-pulling", discusses an asymmetric mechanism of motivation for university organizational innovation, including "environment-mission-resource"; By analyzing the mechanism of organizational inertia and isomorph in university organization, this research expounds the different inertia resistance of resource, structure, strategy, and culture in the process of organizational innovation, and the different mode of action of compulsory mechanism, imitative mechanism, normative mechanism in organizational isomorph.This research concludes four patterns of university organizational innovation: mission-leading pattern, knowledge-leading pattern, government-leading pattern, and market-leading pattern, analyzes the different processes and features of the four patterns, and does a relative case study. This research also discusses four value orientations during university choosing the pattern of organizational innovation, which is subject-orientation, academy-orientation, efficiency-orientation, and legitimacy-orientation, and builds the process mode of choosing organizational pattern. Based on Chinese economic and social background and the development trend of higher education, this research advises a tactics for university organizational innovation based on mission-leading pattern.Using Dalian University of Technology as a case, this research analyzes the content, process, characteristics and motivation of organizational innovation in DUT, to verify the thesis above and offer reference materials of organizational innovation for Chinese universities.
