The thought of learning society was put forward in 1960's. It is tightly related to theawakening of and attention to the crisis of existence with which the human was confronted inthe middle of twentieth century all over the world. In order to tackle the problem of humandevelopment and to answer the challenge of the human existent crisis, 'the learning society' hasgradually changed from concept to idea and from theory to practice. Therefore it is a keyproblem to catch hold of the essence of the learning society correctly and to make sure themission of education in building the learning society. To answer the key problem will providethe great theoretical significance and practical value for the construction of the learning societyin our country and in other countries all over the world. This dissertation tries to answer it. Based on Marxism historical materialism theory, the dissertation used the basic principlesof Marxism practice-existence philosophy and Marxism culture philosophy to survey theconnotation and essence of the learning society ideology, and to corroborate the historic missionof education in constructing the learning society. The dissertation adopted the method of historiography, the method of literature research,and the method of comparative research. The dissertation is mainly composed of three parts. Every part is made up of three chapters. Part one, the human existence: learning and education. The main conclusion of thispart as follows: First. The human existence is not the same as the survival of animal life. The humanexistence means generating, that is to say, 'Being Is Becoming'. On the ground of biologicalinstinct and in the process of practical life, human creates the mind that is the unique capabilityof human life, and generates the particular life system that includes the biological life, the sociallife, and the spiritual life. The nature of human is created in the existent practice gradually. Thatis the creativity of human. Compared with other lives, the character of human is a free andconscious action, i.e. the creative practice. The nature of the realistic individual is thesummation of all social relations. The process of human existence is the process of present life,i.e. the process to generate and develop the human nature. This process tightly associated withhuman's learning and education. Second. Inspected from the perspective of the existence philosophy, the human learning isthe application of human life capability. It is the basic style of human existence. Human isgrowing into or becoming human only through learning. The essence of human learning is tosucceed the human nature created already in human long history and to create the new naturegradually. As one of the intercourse action between people, the education is to guide learningaction through intercommunion in the life process and for the sake of life. So the nature ofeducation can be interpreted as the existent practice to lead learning action through informationchanging. The responsibility of education as follows: to arouse and guide the appropriateinterest of learning, to satisfy the proper needs of learning, to direct the right orientation oflearning, to elevate the level of learning and to enlarge its scope. Third. There is interdependent relation between learning and education. That is to say thatthe learning is the precondition of education, and the education leads the learning. It is difficultto imagine that the education can be existent without learning, and vice versa. The greatdisadvantage of the old education as follows: it wanted to cultivate or to mold person by givingand accepting the knowledge; it looked down on or disregarded the learning, baffled anddistorted the learning indeed, as a result it lost its own ground to exist and develop. The realcharacter of the education guiding the learning is to lead individual life on the ground of thesocial life.
