Marital Commitment (MC) is a kind of devotion and identity which an individual thinks about his (her) own marital relationship from emotion, psychology, and behavior. Marital commitment is a very important predictor in marriage. Some theories on marital commitment are introduced in this paper; some personal traits that may influence marital commitment are analyzed. This dissertation contains two parts.At the first part of the dissertation, the researches on commitment and marital commitment are reviewed. First, the concept of commitment is introduced. Based on the manner in which commitment is defined in three forms: commitment to social entities, commitment to a line or course of action, commitment to a goal. Commitment to social entities contains three parts; they are organizational commitment, occupational commitment, and interpersonal commitment. Most previous researches on interpersonal commitment have been conducted with the persons involved in dating and marital relationship. As marital commitment is salient within the context of marriage, more researchers begin to interesting on it. The predictors of commitment are social forces, cognitive forces and behavioral forces. Social exchange theory, interdependent theory and Social learning theory have been used extensively to explain marital commitment.Second, some famous theories and models on marital commitment are introduced. According to Rusbult's investment model of commitment, commitment is a function of satisfaction with the relationship, availability of alternatives to the relationship, and investment size. Johnson's commitment framework which posits that the decision to continue a relationship is a function of three distinct experiences of commitment, they are: personal commitment, moral commitment, and structural commitment. Adams and Jones suggest the existence of three primary dimension of marital commitment: commitment to spouse, commitment to marriage, feeling of entrapment, they believe that marital commitment is a versatile construct useful in explaining the development and continuation of both functional and dysfunctional marital relationship. This study is based on their theory.
