Since schools emerged, education has been irrevocably committed to text understanding. In another word, school education puts its focus on educational text understanding. But in the history of education development, the status of the educational text goes ups and downs, and educational text understanding often tends to texts or readers just like a pendulum. And in the historical key moment of the education metaparadigm transformation(in Doll's words), there appears much confusion, such as, how on earth should people consider the educational text, how on earth should people understand the educational text, which is closely connected to what educational text understanding is. Therefore, it is necessary to search for the ontology of educational text understanding.Based on understanding theories(especially philosophic hermeneutics), and reading theories(especially theory of acceptance aesthetics and reader response theory), and theory of subject and text theory, this paper analyzes the history of educational text understanding, its essence and its structure(the key elements and their relationships), and its mechanism of circle, and the evaluating standards of its rationality and effectivity.Mastering the development sequence of education text understanding , it becomes the prerequisite of analyzing it. This paper divides the history of Chinese educational text understanding into three major stages: the ancient classical educational text and its understanding, the modern science educational text and its understanding, and the post-modern aesthetic educational text and its comprehension. These three major stages correspond to the pre-modern education period, the modern education period and the post-modern education period. Because of different education values, educational text understanding is characterized differently in each historical stage. In the ancient time, for the sake of political cultivation, the Chinese ancient educational text had strong classical characteristics, and spoke highly of texts. As for the general tendency, educational text understanding mantains the dense intention of lasting the cultural lifeline. And this determines the Chinese ancient education's mission which is to defend the culture. This mission is realized by respecting the classical, believing in the teachers and the original, acquiring, practising and fulfilling, which becomes the property of the classical education text understanding.
