OBJECTIVEDomestic violence (DV) is recognized as world problem. The present study is to investigate the prevalence of DV in Hunan, and to study a range of characteristics about domestic violence, the violence households, and the perpetrators and victims of DV. METHODS1. Using a multi-stage sampling strategy, 9451 households involving 32720 persons in urban, rural and industrial areas in Hunan were surveyed. A cross-sectional survey was used. Multiform clue investigation and face-to-face interview were combined to investigate the prevalence of DV.2. 310 households with a history of DV (DV-households) were randomly selected, and compared to control group of 310 non-DV-households matched for family structure. 318 perpetrators and 306 victims in DV-households were interviewed for the present study. 310 controls matched for perpetrators' gender, age and family role were selected in non-DV-households.3. A Semi-structured and face-to-face interview was used to case-control study. A self-designed DV-household questionnaire was administered to the head of DV and non-DV-households.
