Women education thoughts in modern times,an overlapping research area among the history of education thoughts,women history and society history,has its uniqu e research value in recent years and also helps understand the relationship between w omen rights movement and national emancipation campaign.It is even the base to int erpret women education systematization.This paper,by observing Zhounan Women Sc hool(1905-1938);gains insights into its twisting development and complicated problem s it encountered during the transferring period of Chinese modern society in Hunan a s well as in the society of the modern times,thus fully analyzing women education thoughts trend,gender culture and the relationship between social concepts and wome n subject identity construction and displaying the change process of women education thoughts in modern times by embedding Zhounan Women School in the whole histo ry in modern China.Modern China faces great changes and saving China from dying and making the country rich and its army strong have become the theme of that era.Women school promotion has become a topic for top-intellectuals as a culture sign and has joined in the nation construction.Zhounan Women School is established under this very hist orical setting and its development process is closely linked to modern women school reforms,nationalism campaign and women rights movement.It is to some extent a place of idea exchange and strength trial for both nationalists and feminists and is al so the evolving epitome of evolution about modern women education thoughts.Facin g various complicated factors,Zhounan women students are not the pure passive.The y seize the chance to construct their subject identities all by the selves by setting up responsibility discourse.With the construction of "women school promotion" as a national discourse,here comes women images'redefinition and identity location.The concept of "Good wife a nd mother",introduced from Japan at that time,is changed into new names such as "women citizens" "equal education for both men and women" "new women" etc,whic h stands for an idea,or a kind of education thoughts,or women image,or even a metaphor.When met with women education,these new names mix up into some wo men education ideasAfter Wuxuweixin and before the anti-war,ideas such as "good wife and mother","women citizens" and "equal education for both women and men" come to existence one by one,which become the main stream change of modern w omen education by changing,or having conflicts and determine the development dire ction of women education.Because of its privacy and local characer,Zhounan wome n school has its unique characeristics.Women intellectuals benefit a lot due to the modern women education.Educatio n broadens their minds,enriches their knowledge and cultivates their abilities,finally bringing about the sex structure change and opening the construction of women subje ct identities.Conscious women intellectuals begin to observe the aim of women educ ation critically,making the idea of "good mother and wife' criticized and suspected c onstantly because of its own limits.Women education thoughts make it possible to c onstruct women subject identities and those educated women on the other side becom e the energetic forces pushing the women education thoughts forward.Taking women students living and studying in Zhounan Women School--- a loca 1 school during the period of MingGuo as subjects,using particular cases as research approach,from the angle of social gender and some other reseach methods from the thoughts history,women history and rigional social history,this paper displays its c ampus life and social performance from analyzing its own magazine,letters,diaries,as signments and memoirs as well as from oral account and interviews.Taking women this "small history" to remedy the faults of "big history",this paper broadens the res earch field and also helps establish the new history concepts and theory frame,thus having value in theoretical methods.
