School building is an educational place that is built by people with educational aims purposely, and the quality of that will affect the general running of school activities as well as the quality of its students. On the other hands, school building as a carrier also reflects educational thoughts, sense of values, economic and cultural conditions of the society. Apparently, it takes an important position of the whole society. However, there are few studies of school building have been done in academia of Chinese scholars in the contemporary era, and which bring on serious problems and challenges both in theory and practical application at a certain extent, including: the literature review has showed that there are no theoretical research of school building with systemic inquiry in recent decades of years; it is not only faced with an absence of professional association for researchers, but also faced with vacancy of cares both from the theoretical and practical perspective in the academia of architecture, pedagogy, cultural study and psychology; the status quo of that induce numerous of problems like school building can't meet the requirements of teachers' teaching and students' learning effectively, can't promote the sustainable development of school, limited with essential humanism and lack of culture spirit in school building. It is also found that there is a big gap between some main countries (or regions) and China from a perspective of comparative study. What the above analyses that have been done all point to one sixty-four-dollar question, that is we not only need to take some systemic inquiries in theory in order to fill a vacancy of that of school building, but the challenges faced in practical application also showed that we need some further understanding of school building, especially focused on its educational implications and cultural values. Thereby, with a focus on general primary and secondary schools and use some methodologies of field study, internet investigation, interview with key persons and literature review, this research takes on a trip with two main research ways for school building: one is to construct a theory and the other is to apply the theory with some empirical analysis. The research on school building as a cross-disciplinary research field has close relationships with pedagogy, culture study and architecture in terms of theory construction. As a serve supporter of educational activities, the function of school building needs to pay attentions on mutual and dynamic relationships among educational philosophy, brain study and learning theory, ways of teaching and learning, educational administration and ICT in education with school building. Since culture act as spirit of building, it is essential for school building to take care on individualized culture of one school, connect the characteristic and requirement of teachers and students with humanism at heart, and also pay attentions on local culture and ethnic culture as well. Whereas architecture works as a fundamental theory of school building, it tells us what kinds of tectonic elements or functional spaces constitute the school building and what kinds of basic principles of planning and design which we have to follow, besides, it also tells us a nice theory of school building should take consideration of psychology and aesthetics in architecture. Virtually, the above issues of this research constitute the main work of the chapter 2, 3 and 4.The study of theory application and empirical analysis of school building is mainly focused on educational implications and cultural values. For the former, the study showed that almost every part of school building has its own educational implications, and the building will brings multiple effects on teachers and students regarding to moral traits and sense of values, personal behaviors and educational achievements, body well-being and relax through material spaces and symbols as well as through the interaction between user and environment. For the latter, school building reflects its cultural values from multiple approaches and ways, namely schools looking for characteristics reflect individualized culture in its building, schools takes on humanism at heart present humanistic culture in its building, and schools based on localism shows local culture in its building. Actually, these two aspects of this study constitute the main contents of chapter 5 and 6.
