With the development and change of Chinese modern society, modern university has increasingly undertaken more and more social responsibilities since it came into being. The three functions of Western modern university ---training talents, developing science and serving society are gradually revealed in China with its several decades'development. The change of university functions in this short time put forward new requirement on university teachers'professional qualities, and accordingly caused the change of teachers'professional qualities and conduct.From the beginning, the primary function of Chinese modern university is to train talents. At that time the educational activities in universities were mainly carried out on teaching. During the early years of the Republic of China, academic researches appeared occasionally in university and later increased. Since 1917, with the advocate of universities with Beijing University as their core, academic researches have become an important part in university activities. The function of developing science began to show up in Chinese modern university in the 1920s or so. Almost at the same time, influenced by various social factors, the concept directly serving the society appeared and gradually accepted by universities around the country. Soon after that, the function serving the society became clear in universities.Along with the constant change and expansion of university functions in modern China, teachers'professional qualities altered. During the time Chinese modern university took training talents as their main function, teachers'qualities began to form up. There are two aspects, one is teaching ability and the other is teaching attitude.The society put forward new demands on teachers'professional qualities after the function of developing science appeared in universities in modern China. University teachers are required of not only being possessed of better teaching qualities, but also the capability of academic research. Once the academic research capability becomes the important factor of teacher qualities, it will put forward new demands on teachers'teaching ability and further affect their teaching ability and attitude.After Chinese modern university showed the function of serving the society, university teachers not only went in for teaching and academic researches, but also done their best to directly serve the society. Therefore university functions put forward new demands on teachers'qualities. These new demands, generally speaking, teachers should be possessed of the concept and ability of serving the society. They are not independent; however, are reflected in teaching activities and researches. Its nature is to put forward new requirements on university teachers'teaching and research ability, and further brings about the change of their teaching and research conduct.With the constant change of university functions in modern China, we put forward new requirements on university teachers'professional qualities, which have also led to the improvement of our professional qualities and teaching act. The evolution of University functions on university teachers'influences have realized by these mechanisms including the higher educational system, the university organization administration, the internal relationship of university teachers, individual teaching practice reflection mechanism of the university teachers and so on.Therefore, professional qualities of university teachers in modern China are an integral whole. Its development is affected by the evolution of university functions, and also the basis of realization of the university teachers'professional qualities. In this kind of mechanism, however, individual teaching practice and reflection of university teachers'are the most important.
