With the globalization that China's construction enterprises are facing, the traditional contracting mode is under serious attacking. The modern project implementation mode represented by general contract which adapt to the inevitable trend of development of construction market and the owner's objective requirements is gradually accepted by the industry, and shows infinite vitality. As the practitioners of general contract mode, general contractor enterprises are growing and developing in China. However, the development of our general contractor enterprises (GCEs) is constrained by variety of internal and external factors. There is a big gap between our enterprises and international famous enterprises, especially in core competence which maintained the sustainable competitive advantage. At the same time, the theoretical study carried out by the project management community is lack of systematic and theoretical depth. It's difficult to meet the rapid development of the project contractor's actual needs. This thesis is the comprehensive exploration on the core competence of this specific enterprises group, particularly on the constituent elements of core competence. The result is not only the enlargement of core competence theory but also the theoretical guidance for the practice of GCEs.This thesis analyzed the characteristics of GCE, used economic and management theories and tools comprehensively, defined GCE on a multi-angle, studied its path model theoretically, and established its internal value chain model and external value system. On this basis, it proposed the content of GCE's core competence, and discussed its characteristics exclusively so that addressed the prerequisite of the study on GCE's core competence. The thesis constructed a GCEs core competence elements analysis model including enterprise level and project level through literature ananlysis, combined data ananlysis of several famous internatinal GCEs, raised the related assumptions and propositions, and made the questionnaire base on the model. The survey covered 16 provinces and cities, concerned number of construction companies. It applied standardized and scientific empirical research methods to verify the proposed hypothesis, to carry out quantitative research on the parameters of variable. Afterwards fixed some parameters of the model variables and finally formed the GCE core competence elements model suitable for four kinds of GCEs in China. The thesis fully account the difficulty to quantify the content of the core competence and its abstract features, used a questionnaire survey method combining statistical analysis to solve the measurement problem for the fuzzy core competence elements. It's the innovation on research method of core competence elements and will be the references to the other type of enterprises. The thesis finally put forward the feasible suggestions on how to strengthen the weak internal elements so that enterprises may have the pententialities and advantages of long-term development base on China's GCE's actual situation and the proposed core competence elements model.
