The Research On Knowledge Management For Large-scale Construction Projects

As a product factor, knowledge has been playing an impoi'tant role in promoting economy and social life, but the significance of which was recognized only after the report titled Knowledge-based Economy published by OECD(Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) in 1996, the sustained growth of American economy in 1990s and the swift development of knowledge-based industry, such as IT industry. During the construction process of an engineering project, knowledge management is an inevitable requirement.As a symbol of large-scale construction projects, the management thoughts and model of the Three Gorges Project have provided voluble experiences for other large-scale construction projects management. So it is of great significance to study the success experiences of the Three Gorges Project, and draw knowledge management methods and means from the experiences in order to improve the management level of large-scale construction projects and promote the invest profit.Based on the research achievements of predecessors, by the comprehensive utilization of information science, project management theory, knowledge management theory and information, technology, by the means of theoretical analysis and case study, through the thorough study on the Three Gorges Project, the dissertation aims at large-scale construction projects management in the following fields:Firstly, by the combining the theories on knowledge management and project management with the management experiences of the Three Gorges Project, the author has analyzed the relation between construction projects management and knowledge management, and drawn the following conclusion: the process of projects management is the procedure of knowledge management, the essence of projects management is knowledge management, the success of large-scale construction projects bases on a knowledge body. In fact, the production, dissemination and use of organizational knowledge is a systems engineering, which includes organization system, management mechanism and organization culture. So we can say knowledge management for large-scale construction projects is a systems engineering.Secondly, from the aspect of systems engineering, the author has generalized Knowledge management approaches from the management experiences of the Three Gorges Project. Chinese government and the Three Gorges Company has set up special institutions, made scientific research, procured service by bidding, held technology exchange meeting, engineered stimulating mechanism, enhance staff training, perfected projects management system, set up the Three Gorges Management System to get the needy knowledge and make full use of them during the construction of the Three Gorges Projects, the result of which is the success of the Three Gorges Project.Thirdly, theauthor intends to set up a knowledge management system of large-scale construction projects, the core of which is project management and which contains organization system, technology system, management system and risk system. Thus it opens a new research direction for academic and practical research of project management and knowledge management.The suggestions given at the end of the dissertation are that we should establish the idea of knowledge management in large-scale construction projects management, and how to ensure the success of large-scale construction projects knowledge management.
