Weaving And The Prototype

This thesis detailed studied Yunjin, the highest technology and artistry brocade in China, to structure the philosophical thinking of the design.While the Jacquard loom was arrived in 1804, the door of the weaving industry has opend. Three decades after then, even the market is flooded with factory made woven product, the enthusiasm for handcrafted woven product is growing, we had to ask whether we lost something in the process of moving from handcrafted woven product to automated production, hence nowadays people always hope to return to the beginning or emphasize the origin of warp and weft to remedy those loses. To discuss this issue, we must look back to the era when revolution occurs, the era when weaving technology changed dramatically over the world--18 century.In the 16-17 century, when the global weaving technology revolution started to ferment, there was a technology dominated Chinese handcrafted industry and still has not been conquered by the automated machine---- Zhuanghua, it developed vigorously in China, this technology has been chronically called Yunjin brocade, it has mechanical management facsimile---Huaben( like the jacquard cards but created with threads), at the same time it also has non-mechanical local part that benefit from the freedom of pattern and colour. Thus, Joseph Needham is doubting when little modern science developed at the time, we need to ask whether mechanization and automation is the only way forward for the handcrafted woven development?Through systematical research, in this thesis, uses Zhuanghua as the representative, the value of Chinese Yunjin brocade is, the pure of local weaving from the seemingly informative finishes, the ultimate pursuit of sophistication from never-ending cultural aesthetic innovation, and beauty of balance between technology and art.
