Human Settlements Environment (HSE) study, especially a completely regionalhuman settlements empirical study is a huge systematic project, which related with mostfields of humankind knowledge system at the semantic perspective. Four key problemsare the critical maters for establishing real Human Settlements Sciences, which includeclarifying the semantic object of human settlements environment, researching the innercontradiction of human settlements environment, establishing a systematic recognitionmodel for human settlements environment, and carrying on a series of empiricalverification study. Staring with two basic scholarship viewpoints: theory-technology-empirical study is an integrated Trinity and nature-social-artificial system is also anintegrated Trinity, this paper present a theory framework called (mountainous) HumanSettlements Environment Info-Spectrum(HSEIS) based on the full merging of “HumanSettlements Sciences” theory and “Geo-Information Spectrum” theory, accordingmethodology and a empirical study (taking Chongqing municipality as an empiricalregion) had been also tested and verified. This paper dissected the inner contradiction ofmountainous human settlements environment with the systematic human settlementssciences perspectives, expressed the external distinguishability of mountainous humansettlements environment through spatial information spectrum recognition model, testedthe feasibility of human settlements environment systematic simulation throughoutnumerical modeling and spatial analysis method, verified the effectiveness ofinformation spectrum through empirical study. Though the theory construction andempirical study process, HSEIS had been interpreted as a systematic methodology forhuman settlement’s study. This paper composed by eight chapters, the first four chaptersis theory study, the middle three chapters is empirical study, and the last chapter istheory summary. The main contents are as follows:1) Theoretical construction study: discussing the basic theory foundation andconstructing the theory frameworks for HSEIS (Chapter two to chapter four). The focalpoints of this section include: discussing the theoretical foundation and describing thesemantic object of HSEIS(what’s the symbol meaning of HSE?), discovering the innercontradiction of HSE (what determines the state of HSE?), proposing a technicalsolution for HSE systematic recognition and simulation (how to express the connotationand epitaxial information of HSE?). Accordingly, a series of technology model had beenestablished, which comprised by (mountainous) HSE semantic model (HSESM,chapter two),(mountainous) HSE systematic adaptation condition model(HSESACM,chapterthree), and (mountainous) HSE info-spectrum model(HSEISM, chapter four).Depending on above models, this paper proposed the theory framework for HSEISM(chapter four). Theoretical study reveals: the symbol meaning of HSE is a kind ofgeneralized human habitat space in certain scope of time and space, which weresuperimposed bye nature environment, social environment, artificial environment anddynamic network of social man. Further more, the mountainous HSE is a subtype ofHSE, which’s space scale and syntax was not restricted but organization logic andnature factors index range was restricted; the state of HSE was determined by binaryadaptation relation controlled by HSE subject and object, this is the main contradictionof HSE; the theoretical framework of HSEIS was comprised by three module (naturemodule, social module and artificial module), three levels (macro level, mid level andmicro level), three types (symptom info-spectrum, diagnosis info-spectrum andimplement info-spectrum) and three dimensions(time dimension, space dimension andtime-space integrated dimension).2) Technology methodology study: establishing the technical methodology forHSEIS’s numerical analyzing process.(chapter four to chapter seven). Depending onGIS (Geographic Information System) technology, helping with a series of methodssuch as Remote Sensing, spatial analysis and statistics, numerical modeling etc, this partrealized the prototype designing and example study of HSE spatial info-spectrum(is asubtype of HSEIS, HSESIS). Concretely, a series of subtype model of HSEIS had beenestablished, which include HSE symptom info-spectrum (HSESIS, chapter five), HSEdiagnosis info-spectrum (HSEDIS, chapter six) and HSE implement info-spectrum(HSEIIS, chapter seven), accordingly index system and algorithm had been created too.The technical process reveals: the opening spatial analysis technical methodologyrepresented by GIS and RS is a valid technical platform, which can bring in a series ofnumerical analysis model such as HSE adaptation diagnosis methodology and HSEsustainable diagnosis methodology conveniently; the shape of HSESIS, HSEDIS andHSEIIS Showing a regression pattern, which can be called a “image-graph-image”circle; in the process of establishing HSESIS, the main function of GIS is spatial dataanalyzing and visualizing, while the RS’s main function is spatial informationextracting.3) Example validation studies: taking typical mountainous region as an example,systematically verifying the effectiveness of HSEIS’s framework and methodology (chapter five to chapter seven). This part taking Chongqing municipality as an example,depending on HSESM, HSESACM and HSEISM, applying the prototype of HSESSIS,HSEDSIS and HSEISIS as template, established the HSESIS (chapter five), HSEDIS(chapter six) and HSEIIS (chapter seven) for Chongqing municipality. Info-spectrumreveals: the HSE system of Chongqing municipality showing significant adaptationphenomenon, the level of topographical suitability index (TSI) had the dominantinfluence to social and artificial environment factors developing, but some place withhigh TSI did not own accordingly high human settlements scale and density, thusconstituting a spatial antithesis pattern and generating polarization tendency; atsouthwest of China mountainous region, the inner mechanism for this can be explainingas “two guiding power balancing principle”,“two power” means topology resistanceforce and social location motive force; the artificial factor’s developing scale anddensity is the balancing result of the “two power”, if the former power is bigger than thelatter, then the artificial environment factors couldn’t developing,the space will expressmore nature characteristic. On the contrary, if the former power is less than the latterpower, then the artificial environment factors could developing,the space will expressmore artificial characteristic. As far as human settlements types, the former case wouldevolving into nature space or agriculture space, yet the latter case would evolving intotown or city space. Otherwise, the space would keep the existing state.4) Based on above discussion, basic rules for (mountainous) human settlementsresearch had been concluded, furthermore, a new methodology pattern for mountainoushuman settlements environment construction and planning had been proposed too(chapter seven to chapter eight). In this part, in accordance with human settlementsenvironment symptom spatial info-spectrum (HSESSIS) and human settlementsenvironment diagnosis spatial info-spectrum (HSEDSIS), depending on the HSEadaptation hypothesis, a special mode for human settlements spatial planning had beenproposed, which can be expressed as “region-point-axis-belt” spatial planning model(RPABSPM)(chapter seven). At last, depending on a regional example study, paperconcluded the theory framework and according technical methodology, ten basicdisciplines with respect to mountainous human settlements environment research andconstruction had been generalized too(chapter eight).Overall, Info-Spectrum is a kind of systematic recognition model oriented byobject outer recognizable character, mountainous HSE is the object for HSEIS, yet theHSEIS is just an expression way for HSE. Cognitive content for HSE can be considered as theory, info-spectrum’s construction mechanism can be deem as technology, theanalysis and integration procedures to both of the above can be regard as methodology,they are the three integrated trinity, which mean HSEIS in this paper.
