Gymnasiums are large crowed venues with large spatial span and space capacity as well as dense population. In humid tropical areas, energy consumption of air-conditioners of gymasiums is enormous,, which may deteriorte air quality and produce epidemic threats. Based on the needs of architectural energy efficiency and health, the indoor gymnasiumair conditioning is transforming from tournament-specific mode into a comprehensive mode focusing on natural ventilation supplemented with air-conditioning. Natural and ecological indoor air-conditioning is one of the developing tendencies of gymnasium ventilation. Ventilation under wind pressuer takes the leading role in gymnasium in humid tropical areas. In South China, for example, with long summer and abundant wind energy, gymnasiums need to turn out different looks along with climate change. This paper attempts to study the internal synergic rules between the site or shape of gymnaisums and ventilation under wind pressure in a two-level structure:1. The level of synergism. Study of the internal synergic rules between gymnasium site or shape and natural ventilation through the method of simulated experiment with computer and simulation software is the essensital of this paper, which is an interdisciplinary subject between architectural design and passive energy-saving technologies. 2. The level of design strategy. The design strategy of gymnasium site and shape is then proposed based on the above synergism, which is the application of this paper and involves architectural design.The following five aspects are detailed:Firstly, the study on synergism between gymnasium site and ventilation under wind pressure and the design strategy. The gymnasium site study covers the general layout and environment of gymnasiums. By studying the synergism of gymnasium site with macro-wind envirionment and design strategy, the rules for design of gymnasium site with favorible outdoor wind environment is summerized to provide controllable factors for natural ventilation design of gymnasiums.Secondly, the study on synergism of gymnasium shape with ventilation under wind pressure and the design strategy. Based on the verified coupling relation between gymnasium shape and ventilation under wind pressure, the rules for design of gymnasium shape beneficial to ventilation with wind pressure is proposed. Furthermore, the method for construction of such shape beneficial to ventilation under wind pressure is discussed and the strategy for shape design is summerized accordingly by adjustment of structural model of three spatial structural systems—stressed, bent, and tensioned.Thirdly, the study on synergism of gymnasium space with ventilation under wind pressure and the design strategy. Based on the verified coupling relation between gymnasium space and ventilation under wind pressure, the rules for design of gymnasium space beneficial to ventilation with wind pressure is proposed. Furthermore, the method for space organiztion which is beneficial to ventilation under wind pressure is discussed and the strategy for space design is summerized accordingly by adjustment of space enclosure and flow line organization.Fourthly, the study on synergism of the interface with ventilation under wind pressure and the design strategy. Based on the verified coupling relation between gymnasium interface and ventilation under wind pressure, the rules for design of gymnasium interface beneficial to ventilation with wind pressure is proposed. Furthermore, the method for construction of such an interface beneficial to ventilation under wind pressure is argued and the strategy for interface design is summerized accordingly by adjustment of the form of interface and windowing methods.Finally, by comparision with as-built gymnasiums, the above synergism and designs strategies are verified.China is shouldering the responsibilities to reduce carbon emission and control greenhouse effect. Energy efficiency and emission reduction becomes an indispensable part of architectural efficiency design of gymnasiums in humid tropical areas.This paper explores the synergy of gymnasiums with ventilation under wind pressure from the perspective of gymnasium site, shape, space and interface and proposes corresponding design strategies. It is an significant attempt to improve wind energy utilization, minimize air-conditioning dependance, realization of gymnasium efficiency and creation of large healthy spaces.
