With the rapid development of Chinese cities, historic districts in city are facingmany new and pressing problems, such as building fell into disrepair; impropertransformation; real estate development; too large density of population; agingfunction; inadequate facilities; deterioration of living conditions, popularity of cars;influx of tourists, etc. How can historic districts be able to achieve sustainabledevelopment facing these real pressures?The purpose of reference the concept of environmental capacity to the study ofhistoric district is to determine the limits of human activities and development in theneighborhoods. The basic characteristics of neighborhoods will change when humanactivities and development exceed the amount established. This paper establishes thetheoretical system of environmental capacity in historic district and analyzes historicdistrict’s complex environmental, economic and social issues from viewpoint ofenvironmental capacity. It provides theoretical methods and data support to scientificdecision-making by quantitative analysis method. Tianjin Wudadao district is studiedas a typical case of the environmental capacity of historic district to verify the theoryand it proposes sustainable development direction of Tianjin Wudadao district.This paper adopts the method of quantitative and qualitative combination andliterature and field research combination. Space Syntax software and figure-groundrelationship are used in spatial analysis. Environmental psychology is used inpsychological analysis of human behavior. At the same time it learns fromenvironmental engineering, ecology, economics and research results and methods ofother disciplines.The innovation is the concept of environmental capacity will be applied to thehistoric district’s first attempt; proposing the concept of environmental capacity inhistoric district; building environmental capacity assessment of historic districtapproach and applying it to assessment and decision-making of historic districtprotection planning; environmental capacity analysis of historic district with SpaceSyntax software.Research shows that environmental capacity is an effective tool of sustainableenvironmental assessment in historic district. Environmental capacity research does not have historic district planning update itself, but as a historic district planningstrategy starting point for sustainable development it can assess planning.Environmental capacity research has several key findings in historic district: thecumulative effect and indirect effect must be concerned and take "preventivemeasures"; perception research and future positioning of historic district should begiven considerable weight in the study; purpose of the study is to provide a strategicupdate policy and a more solid foundation.
