Since the new century, the architecture in cold region have gradually faced unprecedented challenges: Global climate fluctuation makes the extreme weather condition even worse; Rising industry-wide awareness of ecology results on higher requirements on construction quality; the excessive use of technology and resources has been curbed because of conservation-oriented society development process. All these changes result in the demand of response. Cold region architecture need a design method that fits the regional characters, which makes architecture a key connection between people and nature, and generates a new balance by breaking through the regional limits in climate, materials and cultural. "Responsive Design" will be a new and very unique research idea for the cold region architecture, either regarding it as a concept or a method.The responsive design integrates the relevant concept of the environmental climatology, biological evolution and dynamic architectural theory. It is defined as an initiative thinking from the subject and a dynamic behavior integrating the object elements, and a process expressing responsive changes with diachronic character. Sustainable concept expands the main advantages of the system science, life cycle theory and circulation economic theory. It clarifies the direction of responsive design development in current social background, as an essential part of the goal and principle. The combination of responsive design and sustainable concept constitute the theoretical principle of this study, and can be a guarantee to achieve sustainable goal of cold adaption, livable, optimal technology under the condition of cold region.Strategy system is established on the relevant factors and mechanism of action of responsive design. For responsive subject, architectures are analyzed from macro to micro, from appearance to essence. For responsive object, environment is separated into native environment, secondary environment and the built environment according to the typical characteristics, and it breaks through the limitation of traditional common problems in cold region. Therefore, the responsive mechanism as thesis, antithesis and synthesis in three points by Trichotomy from the philosophy view is defined, the research framework based on Sustainable concept: resisting design, adaptation design and synergistic design is estabilshed. Finally, the design strategy system and the technique collection of cold region architecture is formed.Level 1. Resisting design of sustainable concept. This part is the thesis point in responsive design strategy system, which means remaining the interior unchangable under the specific and variable environment, selectively isolating external violations from inside to outside. Finally, it responds to the basic appeal of cold adaption. Strategies include city plan that resist the winter cold wind, laying out shape that resist the ice and snow, and interfacing that resist the low temperature.Level 2. Adaptation design of sustainable concept. This part is the antithesis point in responsive design strategy system. Facing the secondary environment that constitutes the inner-environment of architecture, we should absorb its advantages to form a new dynamic balance in architecture, which further responds to sustainable and livable appeal of cold region architectures. Strategies include nomadic space adapting high latitude illumination, interactive function adapting thermal comfort, self organization sites adapting internal ecological.Level 3. Synergistic design of sustainable concept. This part is the synthesis point in responsive design strategy system. The restriction of geographical, economic condition by the integration of the whole industry and multidisciplinary force is broken through to produce additional benefits between each system of architecture. And finally the sustainable appeal of optimal technology is responded. Strategies include integrating structure systems with synergistic construction efficiency, green parts systems with synergistic construction quality, renewable energy systems with synergistic construction costs.This paper sets the cold region architecture which is a big system with multivariate elements and complex relations as the research object. The study is based on a series of targeted responsive design strategy to figure out typical problems, both meaningful in theory and practice. The research meets the demand of sustainable development in Chinese conservation-oriented society. I hope this research can benefit the design status of cold region architecture, and provide guidance for the development of the construction industry.
