Jia Zhangke has been a new star appearing in screenland at home and abroad in 1990s. As an important representative of“the sixth generation directors”, his films has brought in active concentration and wide reputation in domestic and international filmdom by unique theme selection, non-mainstream characterization, and casual image style as soon as they appeared in people’s eyes. Although some criticism about his film creation has been heard, the truth is that his film creation enriches distinguishing features and draws attention of most people. This paper fully analyzes and thoroughly studies Jia Zhangke’s films and cultural thoughts conveyed by his films to gain favorable social historical humanity investigation results, from aspects of author theory research perspective and double historical background of Chinese social development and film development. How to correctly understand and evaluate Mr. Jia’s films and their culture thoughts is also a main purpose of this paper . This paper tries to explore Mr. Jia’s film images’artistic charm, humanities charm and historical value in a comparatively broad vision and more profound level sense to reach an objective evaluation which conforms with the social reality and historical developmentThe appearance of Mr. Jia’s films is not accidental. Most part of their story contents and picture scenes in his films made until now, whether feature films or documentary films, come from social reality of present Chinese bottom society. That is to say, his films have real and deep basis of social realistic life, which has been rare in directors’film creation since the reform and opening up in China. Jia Zhangke’s films has inherited the realism tradition of films made in the 1930s or 1940s, and they also carry forward the movement spirit of new documentary beginning in the 1990’s, which is regarded as the most outstanding and fruitful respect in“the sixth generation directors”. From the aspect of the film aesthetics traceability, Mr. Jia’s films have been the most successful practical result in Chinese movie garden since the turn of the new realism and long-lens theory. Comparatively speaking, attention to which we should pay thoughts content about Mr. Jia’s films instead of their artistic forms, just as people’s study on the new realism films. Accordingly, the basic cognition of the paper is to emphasize the reason that his films gain widely praise at home and abroad is that he always has dense civilian feelings. So his films can be seen as a kind of expression of social conscience for particular-time intellectuals in particular times.In order to comprehensively understand and evaluate Mr. Jia’films, the paper studies his films by combining movie sociology with semiotics and other methods. While focusing on studying Mr. Jia’s movie texts, the paper also pays attention to make some comparative study of domestic film-and-television works produced at the same age or within the similar type, hoping to reveal Mr. Jia’s film characteristics better. The first part of the paper generalizes and analyzes various characters in his films as full as possible, which emphasizes that main type of character in his films is the marginalized and low-class people, and their real life situation is the main image of his films.With the application of movie semiotics, the second part focuses on ducking the space image that his films express, which is not only important for correctly understanding his film, but also necessary for understanding and evaluating social realism sprit of his films. The space of Mr. Jia’s film expressed is the real space that low-class people live, which is the indispensable supplement and comparison for current burnishing media reality in China and also is the artistic expression and cultural critique for some social reality. In one word, his films not just reveal social bad phenomenon. Actually, they are film expression for intellectuals facing social reality conscience.Chapter three discusses social connotation in his films from perspective of sociology and history. The paper points out that each literary work has its own characteristics of social and historical marks, especially for Mr. Jia’s films. His films are not only an objective artistic image of certain social reality, also a kind of historical performance for certain social reality, which means that his films is an artistic performance for China’s specific historical stage of development or can be seen as an image writing for certain current social reality.Chapter four analyzes long-lens application, picture, edit feature and sound processing of his films in detail to discuss new realism features of“real, insipid and impressing”expressed in his films images, according to movie-art theory.Chapter five elaborates the descend of the spirit of New realism in the contemporary era and Jia Zhangke’s thoughts about livelihoodThe last part compares Mr. Jia’s films with the same title materials or similar type of realism film-and-television works made in new period in China to reveal the connotation of new realism in Mr. Jia’s films, which confirms Mr. Jia’s films’active significance better, from the perspective of comparative study.
