The thesis focuses on the intelligentsia narrative during the first three decades of the People’s Republic of China, aiming to reveal the psychological journey and narrative change of the intelligentsia in the novels of1950s to1970s."Intelligentsia narrative" covers the subject, image-building and narration of the intelligentsia.Since the establishment of RPC in1949, Mao Zedong Thought became the maximum ideology and China entered the era of workers, peasants and soldiers. When narrative of workers, peasants and soldiers became dominant in literature, intellectuals, already quit the historical stage, were even marginalized in literature. Having lost the discourse power in politics, the intelligentsia turned to literature and art to express their views. Therefore, their spiritual and emotional world deserves more attention. The intelligentsia narrative provides texts revealing their aesthetic taste and political subconsciousness.Following the defined "intelligentsia narrative" the thesis traces its hidden development through analyzing the literary works marginalized by literature of workers, peasants and soldiers or defined as revolutionary narrative. It starts from "ideological remolding" novels born in the intelligentsia deologial remolding movement right after the establishment of New China. The early spring of intellectuals in the Hundred Flowers period witnessed the appearance of "intervening life" novels. When the class struggle dominated the period, university narrative reflecting how the proletariat defeated the bourgeoisie in the spiritual world came into being. During the Cultural Revolution period, it took the form of "Zhi Qing" literature concerned with educated young people reeducated by the poor and lower-middle peasants. It also included various thought salons and potential writings of literary communities. The thesis discusses theme development, text crack, image genealogy and form and meaning. It reveals intelligentsia spirit, change of genre and style, and variation of forms in the literature of1950s to1970s.Methodologically, the thesis is inspired by the form and function analysis in narratology. While previous studies often focus on contents and ideological criticism of intelligentsia narrative in the first three decades, the present thesis is concerned with the aesthetic interpretation of the narrative form. For example, it analyzes three narrative modes often used in intelligentsia narrative text, namely nesting mode, stream of feeling mode, and fragment mode. At the same time, the author examines the aesthetic process of politics and ideological meaning of forms. The thesis concludes that narrative and form help the intelligentsia to express their ambitions in a secluded manner in the text. It is not only about the techniques that the intelligentsia employs to build the aesthetic world beyond the reality, but also the form that can negotiate between revolutionary grand narrative and personal narrative of the intelligentsia. In the textual criticism, the author "reinterprets" the rhetoric strategy, narrative structure, inner cultural logic, otherness and specific ideological practice in the text, thus revealing the potential division and contradiction. The intelligentsia narrative during1950s to1970s manages to keep the essence of the dominant narrative at that time. Under the name of realistic principle and aesthetic taste for nationalization, popularization and "love by Chinese folks", the intelligentsia narrative keeps alert to style features of such genres as thought-provoking, lyrical and intervening works. When we reflect on this period of history, we criticize the intelligentsia for their timidity on action and the risk of their taking in foreign thoughts and culture indiscriminately; we reveal that lyrical works are not necessarily free from the restraint of "republic-love mode"; we find the pride and prejudice behind the intervention. But it is the intelligentsia narrative during1950s to1970s that foretells literary bloom in the new time, such as reflection novel, enlightment novel, misty poetry and reportage. In summary, subject spirit and narrative of the intelligentsia in literature undergo dramatic changes during the first three decades after1949. But the intelligentsia narrative survives the torture and never stops developing itself to the "underground writing" in the1970s which announces the awakening of man and literature in the1980s which was another intellectual age in the history of China since May4th Movement.
