In china of the1930s, there had been books of art character design with "meishuzi"(there is no unified appellation for the word"meishuzi", it is constantly be used as "word art" or "artistic calligraphy") as their names. During the period of Republic of China, meishuzi emerged based on traditional Chinese characters, and greatly developed by absorbing western fonts design concepts and skill, meishuzi of this era shows characteristics of non-professional, arbitrary, and even blindness, which precisely reflects the coincidence and consistency with era-environment. As a new-emerged art form of Chinese character, meishuzi is still during the process of exploring. It has neither systematic principles nor inherent effective design method, the property, aesthetic standard and Industry location of meishuzi haven’t been specified. Even the name hasn’t been uniformed-it is usually called "tu’anzi"or"meishuzi".The fond of Chinese character has been evolving accompanied with the development of the writing art of Chinese character. Although the formation of meishuzi derives from the structure of Chinese character, the principle and standard of meishuzi configuration are different from that of Chinese character. As goods publicity visual contents, meishuzi emphasizes on its functional aspect, while its aesthetic aspect is embodied as the object of art research. Meishuzi both inherited and developed from the art of Chinese character, but it varies from the art of calligraphy, which is the art of writing performance of Chinese character. Since meishuzi is a kind of design art, it has to be changed, processed and decorated from the font of Chinese character. Because of the essential attribute of meishuzi, it is definitely not just a simple imitation, but a kind of re-shaping or re-configuration of Chinese character.From the point of market development, meishuzi emerged because Chinese character has to adapt the flow of the commodity economy. In order to propagate goods, the inherent shape and instruction of Chinese character must have something to be changed or broken through; from the technical point of view, the western font design has a very large impact on meishuzi.in order to create more abundant, versatile font, absorbing the experience of western character design is necessary, as it can provide more extensive thinks for meishuzi design; from its own development of Chinese character, this art has developed for thousands of years. It has been extraordinary mature and has to be developed with more new factors. Social progress is reflected in every aspect, not only in technique, but also in art and culture, meishuzi is undoubtedly the concrete manifestation that Chinese character art also has to adapt to the progress of human civilization. The research of Meishuzi during the period of Republic of China plays a pole as a link between past and future. It not only demonstrates the unique characteristics of that era, simultaneously it is also an important complement to the artistic content of Chinese characters. Meishuzi is a new art form after calligraphy, not only has inheritance but also development. Meishuzi in that era is a valuable experience source of contemporary font design.
