There is no large number of modern Chinese conjunctions, but they are used frequently and widely, thereby their grammatical significance can’t be ignored. Conjunctions treated as one special classification in the modern Chinese function word system, which is typical of its narrow grammatical function because it universally has no other function but its connecting function. Consequently, there is distinctive boundary between conjunctions and prepositions, adverbs, nouns and verbs owing to its narrow grammatical functions. So, the study of conjunctions has been paid much attention by grammarians in recent years, which is naturally to be the specific research object, especially its determined range and quantity. Based on the standard of quantity of syntax function of conjunctions, this dissertation has mainly made detailed investigative research into such conjunction class as conversion words, phrasal conjunctions, postpositions, synonymous conjunctions and conjunctive structures. This dissertation covers eight chapters, including the following viewpoints and main contents:Chapter One:introduction, covering the causes of selecting the theme, the research significance, the literature review of conjunctions, methodology and the sources of research materials.Chapter Two:the survey of the conjunction in Mandarin. The grammatical function is t aken as the standard to identify conjunctions. The syntactic characteristics of conjunctions are those that conjunction is used to connect different structures, can not be used alone, can not b e used as the sentence components, and can not be modified with other words. The words whi ch don’t suit these characteristics can be excluded. This chapter calculates278conjunctions th rough the investigation on Xiandai Hanyu Xuci Cidian, Xiandai Hanyu Babai Ci, Xiandai Ha nyu Xuci Lishi,The Graded Chinese Syllables,Characters and Words for the Application of Te aching Chinese to the Speakers of Other Languages, and Lianci yu Xiangguan Wenti. And at la st it defines there are220conjunctions in Mandarin based on the characteristics and the resear ches on special conjunctions.Chapter Three:Research on conversion features of conjunctions. Conversion words mean in the broad sense. There are two kinds of words which are ambiguously related to conjunctions:adverbs and prepositions. It is intended to make clear of the classification standards on adverbs and conjunctions, interpret part of the conversion conjunctions and adverbs, and probe the classification standards on conjunctions and prepositions, especially explain the conjunctions like "and","so","by" and others relatively.Chapter Four:Research on phrasal conjunctions. The phrasal conjunctions resemble phrases in form and words in function. Phrasal conjunctions and homomorphic content phrases co-exist in modern Chinese, but they have differences in meaning and functions. The phrasal conjunctions possess three functions of discourse markers:relative marker function, speech marker function and social coordination function. The phrasal conjunctions turn to be discourse markers owing to the process of lexicalization.Chapter Five:Research on postposition“也罢”.Such words include“也罢、也好、不说、的话、则已”.Words like“也罢”are characteristic of modern Chinese disyllable through lexicalization and grammaticalization, which are frequently entangled with words like conjunctions, auxiliaries and modal particles. In terms of language typology, there is strong stability of the position of Chinese particles. The position of Chinese conjunctions can be pre-positive, mid-positive or post-positive for the bidirectional and conjunctive features. The post-positive sense of‘也罢”can be classified as auxiliaries for their resemblance of functions.Chapter Six:Research on conflation of synonymous conjunctions. There are two kinds of synonyms like content synonyms and particle synonyms. Synonymous conjunctions belong to particle synonyms. Whether the synonyms can be treated words partly influences the quantity and range of conjunctions. Firstly, the full synonyms have the similar meaning, grammar and pragmatics, with the suggestion of treating them as one word; the partial synonyms are different in meaning, grammar and usages, with the suggestion of not treating as one. Secondly, as for part of special synonymous conjunctions, whether they are treated as one depends on the similarity and difference.Chapter Seven:Research on conjunctive structure. The conjunctive structure, which is a word or phrase or sentence, is a set of structure. The conjunctive structure has the conjunctive function, with a certain form marker, and can represent some logical relationship, working as some element of a sentence. However, the conjunctive structure is not a word, let alone the affiliation of speech. Moreover, there is some similarity between the extremely conjunctive function of conjunctive structure and the basic grammatical function, which is vital to further research on the conjunctive structure. And part of the conjunctive structure is supposed to be conjunctions.Chapter Eight:conclusion, covering the achievements in the study of modern Chinese conjunctions and the schedule of further exploration.
