China and Vietnam have a lot in common, not only are they closely linked geographically but they also share a history of over two thousand years where there has been many exchanges between both countries and as such over the centuries have had profound influence on each other. The influence that China has had on Vietnam not only reflects in their language but also on the culture. With respect to language, Vietnamese lexicon has more than 60% influences stemming from Chinese origin where the use of nouns accounts for more than 50%. This shows that a high number of Vietnamese nouns have its influence from Chinese origin. Based on its history this research looks at the evolution and analyzes carefully the influence that China has had on Vietnam over the years. For further research, the statistics, analysis and synthesis methods are used to determine the extent of influence that Chinese nouns have on Vietnamese nouns in the areas of grammar, phonetics, semantics and pragmatics.
