Since the Reform and Open Policy was implemented, China has adhered to been guided by Marxism and follow the road of socialism with China’s characteristics. Accordingly, national construction and social transformation have made brilliant achievements in both theory and practice, which have promoted the rapid economic development and provided the necessary material foundation for the modern development of human beings. In a world of multi polarization and economic globalization, all kinds of ideas and cultures contact, blend, and even confront each other more frequently. In the process of promoting active thinking, conceptual exchange, and cultural blending, people’s thinking activities have increased in terms of independence, selectivity, variability and diversity, people’s ideological concepts, moral consciousness, and value orientation have appeared to be more diversified, and the society’s common ideological foundation and common goal have been gradually differentiated and weakened. Meanwhile, with the profound changes in China’s economic system, there are profound changes in social structure, severe polarization in the pattern of interests, and drastic changes in the way of life. Furthermore, such problems as values, cultural construction, scientific development, and ecological civilization are emerging, and social contradictions and conflicts are increasing apparently. In other words, our society is undergoing a "transition dilemma" by showing such transition characteristics as multiplicity, multi-direction, multilayer, developmental imbalance, disorder, and anomie. In regard to the reason, on the one hand, our country is still at the primary stage of socialism, hence the state laws, regulations, policies, and other aspects of the system need to be perfected and improved; on the other hand, the public ideology is lagging behind the time. The present society of our country has two major issues worthy of study and reflection:one is the ignorance of the public mass and the other is the absence of mass culture. To empower a country also need to empower its people. This is also the key and difficult point of constructing our country as a true cultural power. After the transformation from the register of "salvaging the country & the people" since the May 4th Movement to the new register of reform and open-up, we need a further transformation into the register of "empowering the country and the people" demanded by the current society. This is an important transformation task in revitalization of China and rejuvenation of the nation put forward by the present era.Based on the view of Chinalization, popularization, and modernization of Marxism, this research addresses China’s three major realistic problems:the first is how to unify the mass ideology and social consensus; the second is how to properly solve current social contradictions and conflicts; and the third is whether people’s consciousness can be increased to the corresponding level/stage of the development of productive forces. Targeting at our society’s popular culture as the main research subject and using the public mass as the starting point for logical analysis, this dissertation integrates three analytical frameworks:cultural hierarchical structure, cultural psychological structure, and "five in one" civilization construction. From the perspectives of double transformation of culture & civilization, "three differences (China & the West, tradition & modernity, and elite & commoner)",and "four examinations (subject, culture, time, and methodology)", it systematically analyzes the deep reasons underlying the social conflicts during the transformation era and puts forward some countermeasures and strategies. This research aims to guide and help the public mass to adapt to the social transformation and actively resolve social contradictions and conflicts so as to promote social development and progress of our country. In addition, by presenting theories on cultural adaptation of social conflicts, it contributes to the active construction of a conceptual system of modernizing mass culture in a socialist society with Chinese characteristics. The framework of this dissertation is the introduction, the main body (four parts) and the conclusion. The introduction mainly introduces the research background, the research goal and significance, the related literature review, and theoretical framework and methods. The first chapter is mainly to define three groups of basic concepts and relevant concepts from academic and theoretical perspectives and to analyze them from multiple perspectives. From the qualitative dimension (timeliness, commonality, and publicity), it innovatively defines the concept of social public, and from the side of demand, it defines mass culture. It also brings up the concept and task of building mass culture of a socialist society with Chinese characteristics. In addition, it clearly presents the analytical tools (the framework of double transformation of civilization & culture and the dual perspective of modernization and globalization), the research background (social transformation and social culture), and the research subject (social conflicts and social public). The second chapter, mainly from the perspective of civilization, culture and popular culture, from globalization to Chinese Dream, and then to the public individual, practically investigates and academically analyzes China’s social transformation, social conflicts and social public. It also explores the internal basis, needs, and feasibility of cultural adaptation of social conflicts in the social reality. The third chapter is mainly to build cultural adaptation theory. Based on clarification of the concept of cultural adaptation and its application domain, thorough referral to such theories as Marxism, and in-depth excavation of Chinese historical and cultural resources, it puts forward the model of cultural adaptation theory by explaining its premise, object, nature, principle, and mode. The fourth chapter focuses on the application of cultural adaptationtheory. It proposes two critical paths and four national facilities, specifically to promote the construction of three new cultures (society, law, and production & life). In conclusion, this research conducts a monographic study of the problem of social conflicts in contemporary Chinese society during the transformation period. It suggests that "the deep root of the current social conflicts in China lies in the lack of modernization of the social public" and that there is a need to set up scientific views of conflicts. It also puts forward a theoretical prototype and concrete countermeasures from the angle of cultural adaptation. The general strategy is "to build collective force so as to comprehensively facilitate the transformation of the social public into modernity". The key points are "Three Changes" and "Six Mode Conversions". In particular, the values and beliefs of the social public need to be interpreted systematically and updated timely. This study attempts to provide a new insight into the social transformation of contemporary Chinese society and the cultural innovation of the social public. Thus, it promotes the construction of popular culture of socialism with Chinese characteristics and facilitates the modern development of the social public as well as the harmonious and comprehensive progress of the society.
