The poverty of university thought in modern China is due to the shortage of scholar’s innovation strength, which relies on free environment. It demands university scholars to be equipped with Personality that independent with everything surrounding and apart from the other’s influences. Only in this way could the innovation strength be born with new ideas. In a longer view, the Personality of university scholar plays a key role in knowledge accumulation, cultural prosperity and human improvement.What is university scholar’s Personality?Modern university scholars refer to those people who are located in the university organization, absorbed in the pursuit of knowledge and truth, burdened with cultural transference and innovation idea, and served for teaching, researching and social service. Different from respected scholars that integrated with the nature of knowledge, criticalness, publicity and independence, the role of university scholars has set the accompanied certain right and duty. While the neutral value of knowledge itself strengthens the objectivity of scholar’s role, which determines the neutral nature of university scholar. Personality is also a neutral word of de-moralization. Under the context of China, the word Personality often tends to be related with moral personality and ethical personality, while western personality points to the free individual and the corresponding behavior feature and individual difference. The privacy and individuality is the essential connotation of western personality which is totally clear of moral judgment. Personality indicates the shape of independent individual that void of the bondage of people and other things which highlights the core meaning of western personality. Hence, the personality in Chinese meaning which stripped the morality tendency has hit the original meaning of western personality that is specified for free and special individual. As a citizen, university scholar’s personality means free and special individual; while as the academic and social body, his or her personality concludes not only the human independence but also the academic independence. Therefore, university scholar’s personality points to the free academic individual in the university under which two dimensions of independence are included. One is general individual independence and the other is the independence required by the academic activities.Personality is an idea originated from history with the individual experiencing the course form nature to self-awareness. The origination of personality is both historical and cultural. Different cultural background influences the state of personality hugely. Chinese traditional culture is lack of absolute freedom idea of modern western perspective. Before the birth of university scholar, Chinese scholar lives in a dependent state between the body and the soul. Only till the movement of "West learning introduced into China" during the last period of Qing Dynasty to the beginning of Ming Dynasty which brought western democratic thoughts to China did the personality gradually come into being by the enlightenment. However, as the foundation of the new government, the powerful political idea extinguished the newly born personality with the assistance of national machines. After the political movement, personality has experienced a period of recovery, but traditional moral rules and late ideas still existed which interfered the personality culturally. Moreover, the organization and the system in which university scholar lives has close links with personality. The system is precedent to the individual which determines the living state of scholar’s personality to a certain degree. Because personal frame of thought would be influenced by the fixed rules, the rules of academic games interferes the individual invisibly. While cultural or system is the exterior factor, the psychological system covers the interior part. The individual learn to know the self from the relation with others. Meanwhile, the anxiety and unsafe feeling has come into being as the growth of individuality. Thus, personality requires protection and positive direction from negative influence.History, traditional culture, system rules and psychological cognition have covered different dimensions of university scholar’s personality, all of which have combined together in the life course of the individual and exerted considerable influence to the shape of personality. Therefore, the display of specified example of someone in fixed time and space can help us dig out the factors and functional ways of personality through comparative analysis.Through the comparative analysis of Zhou Yiliang and Qian Liqun, the shaping course and the changing factors of their personality has shown naturally along with the difficulties and the conflicts. By analyzing Zhou Yiliang, the menace hidden in the shaping course of personality has been exposed. The idol worship destroyed the personality of the worshiped, while closed social environment and university organization have excluded the selection chances of individual’s freedom, all of which has led the loss of human independence and academic independence successively under the powerful right and politics. By analyzing Qian Liqun, it reflected the conflict between the interior human independence and the exterior academic independence. As a knowledgeable scholar, Qian Liqun has been stapled with two identities. On the one side, he is a spiritual soldier who highlights practice which is value-oriented. On the other side, he is a silent profound scholar which is begun from rational academic principles. There is tense conflict between those two identities.From this point of view, university scholar’s personality must experience a tough period before its foundation. Especially in the21st century in China, it is confronted with double pressure of politics and the market, which remains narrow space for the academic freedom and scholar’s independence which is advocated in the1980s. There is no way but the individual enlightenment can give birth to the personality. Therefore, the unfinished academic enlightenment mission have to be accomplished through refreshing its main body, the emphasis and realizing methods, thus lead the achievement of university scholar’s personality from the angle of cultural cultivation. Additionally, it also requires certain system to polish the individual’s interior character and cultural foundation. Firstly, it demands systematic laws on basic civil rights of scholars. Secondly, the safe and tolerant environment for the growth of scholar’s personality should be provided by the integrated efforts of the whole country in reforming chances, conditions and spaces. Last but not the least important, the whole academia need collective rethinking on academic independence. Each scholar has to review his or her methods, research tools, proposal course and conclusions in rational doubt spirit. The scholars should exclude the non-academic factors and join in actively to establish real democratic academic system.
