Punishment in education, as an educational means, has as long a history as the field of education and has been existing in the educational field since education came into being. In the modern society, however, this long-tradition educational means is examined with its boastfulness of human subjectivity and the appealing of the return of human nature. This essay will concentrate and reflect on the following issues: What is punishment in education? What is the theoretical basis of punishment in education? What are the diachronic forms of punishment in education? What is the circumscription between the rational punishment and irrational punishment? What are the entity, value, function and limitation for the construction of the educational punishment system? How can the punishment in education adhere to principle, return to education, and pursue artistry?Our research is mainly based on theoretical elaboration and field research. In the theoretical elaboration, this essay will probe into the essence of punishment in education and its value orientation in education. This essay will also theoretically elaborate the educational punishment and demonstrate the limitation of punishment in education(rational and irrational punishment in education) through elaborating the evolution and diversification of the concepts on punishment in education at all times and cultures. In the field research, we will investigate and analyze the status quo of punishment in education of sample School A through questionnaire and interview of students and some teaching staff, which will help draw the following four conclusions: conclusion from the investigation on teachers; conclusion from the investigation on students; major problems in the implementation of educational punishment in primary and secondary schools; institution deficiency in the implementation of educational punishment. These conclusions will set a foundation to the elaboration of educational punishment institutionally and strategically.This research finds out that punishment in education is a dynamic educational means, which refers to that educators give negative evaluation of the bad behaviors or qualities of the educated and thus make them undergo a degree of negative emotion experience so as to suppress and decrease the occurrence or development of their bad behaviors.Also, this research thinks that punishment in education is of necessity. However, the conduct of it should follow legal and moral rules as well as educational regularities. Moreover, educators should make every effort for artistry. To be educational, legal, moral, effective and personalized is the basic meaning of the principle of punishment in education.This research demonstrates the indispensability of institutional regulation in the educational punishment. Meanwhile, educational punishment should utilize the institutional effectiveness, guarantee the participation of multi-agents, clarify the purpose and value orientation of educational punishment, and ensure the significance of educational punishment in the exploration of institutional effectiveness and limitation.This research mainly aims at the following problems in implementation of educational punishment: teachers lack legal authorization to wield the punishing power; there is no explicit limitation for teachers to determine the amount of punishment; some teachers hold the inaction attitude towards punishment in education; there is physical or mental punishment in education. In such situation, this research constructs some strategies for punishment in education as follows: determine an appropriate amount of punishment and consult on the punishing method in order to realize the educational regression for punishment in education. Moreover, punishment in education should be at proper timing and with wisdom for the sake of the artistry of punishment in education.
